Filing a return already seems to be optional. I used to know someone who had simple taxes, but didn't want to bother. So she over-withheld every year, and never filed. If the government owes you money and you just never file for it, they are cool with that, apparently. This person is dead now, but when I found that out, it pretty much blew me away. I am so careful to get everything right, but she was willing to literally pay money to blow off tax season.

Exactly....many CPAs are lamenting the $24000 standard deduction because it's estimated that a large majority of filers will just take that. They're not panicking yet because the recent tax changes are still going to get people in their doors for now...but once people start realizing these "pros" are doing nothing but punching in numbers, the next step is the "what do I need you for?" questions and less money in their pockets when people decide just to do it on their own.
