They've even passed laws in many areas to no longer require that firemen etc. live within the city because they couldn't afford it.
P.S. I'm very pro-teacher, much of my extended family work in teaching and it's a tough job in this day and age to be sure.

Why would they come from other places, the teacher pay in Oakland isn't that much higher than other places in Northern California that people would be willing to commute. Average teacher pay in Alameda County (where Oakland is) is $81,772 and the average home price is $869,100. A little over an hour away, in Sacramento County average teacher pay is $76,505 and the average home price is $368,900. Why commute when you can buy an affordable house in Sacramento and still make decent money?
