So with the daily sprouting of threads trashing California and New York for running up the nation's debt and wasting taxpayer money, I thought I'd look up more details on what reality is vs. the rhetoric.

Turns out, blue states are essentially subsidizing lower taxes in red states.

If you listen to Rush Limbaugh, you might think it was those blue states, packed with damn hippie socialist liberals, sipping their lattes and providing free abortions for bored, horny teenagers.

As it turns out, it is red states that are overwhelmingly the Welfare Queen States. Yes, that's right. Red States — the ones governed by folks who think government is too big and spending needs to be cut — are a net drain on the economy, taking in more federal spending than they pay out in federal taxes. They talk a good game, but stick Blue States with the bill.
Most of the top 20 are red states:

New Mexico
Mississippi
Alaska
Louisiana
West Virginia
North Dakota
Alabama
South Dakota
Kentucky
Virginia
Montana
Hawaii
Maine
Arkansas
Oklahoma
South Carolina
Missouri
Maryland
Tennessee
Idaho

California, the right wing's favorite state to hate, gets back only 78 cents of every dollar paid in federal taxes, meaning 22 cents of every tax dollar Californians pay goes to pay the bill for other states, primarily red states that constantly complain about them.

Prosperous Blue states have been subsidizing poor Red states for ages.

My tax dollar goes toward paying for stuff in some redneck conservative town while they bad mouth us Californians and how their system of producing generations of poor after poor is better than our system. It's fun.

Partisan article with no breakdown. Simply a hatchet job. For instance, not mentioned is military spending in some of those states which accounts for some of this imbalance.
Alabama=78% of which was defense spending,
Dont let facts get in the way of your business insider article and your pure hatred.

Ever heard of Norfolk? In Virginia? They get a little bit of those funds
https://militarybases.com/virginia/norfolk/

Then theres little ol #1 Alaska.. the state had the second-highest figure for defense spending.

New Mexico has them things called nuclear weapons facilities,
Stop the hate

Are you suggesting that what you pay in is exactly what should be paid out to a person.... Liberals are funny, they talk a lot of crap and ask for the crap that they oppose... They want redistributing wealth and then say not me though..

...
Why should Alabama receive so much in defense spending dollars? What is so special about Alabama?

New Mexico always tops these list by a huge margin because they are a low population state with a lot of expensive federal facilities. Los Alamos and Sandia National Lab add about $2600 in per capita federal spending by themselves. While those facilities benefit the state the primary beneficiary is the entire country.... If those facilitates were located in California the per capita spending is about $125.

If you want another example gas/oil companies headquartered in Texas are drilling gas in Pennsylvanian which is being distributed to places like New York. If you want to explain how you would propose fairly divvying up the federal tax revenue generated from that I'm listening. Good Luck....

Basic math. Those Red States like MORE income distribution. That is what the numbers speak to.

These reports never define the parameters for money in and money out. Do they include all the military spending in California as part of the money flowing in? All of the money spent on federal lands in California, on border security? Do they count the money funding refugees in California, on the ports, or dams, and fighting wildfires? What counts as money spent?

It's not basic math, if you are going to fairly analyze this it's an extremely complex calculation. The longest stretch of I-80 is 700 plus miles of it running through Nebraska. This road connects NYC to SF... How much of the funding for that road given to Nebraska is used to support the conga line of trucks traveling between those two cities?
