Today's Liberalism is not what it was. It is Progressiveism. Which is absolutely Totalitarian and oppressive. Hence things like more gun control laws and the concept of hate speech.
That's a lame excuse for trying to judge a whole way of looking at things by the extremists. Should we equate conservative with Nazi? That's lazy.
Totalitarianism is a natural progression of liberalism, in which more concentrated power exerts greater control over the populace under the guise of "good intentions" to advance their cause.
The efforts of "social engineering", wherever it has been used in the world, has resulted in the opposite- social ruin. With greater intervention in the lives of individual citizens, liberalism tends to demand greater and greater control when the desired results are not achieved with less "radical" tactics. Thus the progression of social liberalism, under the guise of "helping the poor" changes from a presumed altruistic effort to one of subjugation. Witness the current edicts from the current liberal leaders who are dictating radical alteration of personal lives in order to achieve a "green deal". "I am the boss" and "I am a queen" are statements from liberal leaders who do not perceive themselves to be "public servants", but exalted masters of the public.
Make no mistake of it- liberalism is the road to totalitarianism. Witness the revisionist history in which liberals currently engage, consistent with the notion that "truth is relative". Oddly, this notion was one publically promoted by the Clintons, but has its origins in Stalinism. The dangers of this concept are starkly portrayed in "1984", in which the "truth" is altered on a daily basis to insure that the party is always right. Today, dems similarly alter history to suggest that they were not pro-slavery and were not opposed to civil rights, when in fact history clearly shows this to be false.
it is fine that one quotes history and says the democrats supported slavery and opposed civil rights but lets be honest and continue with the fact that those democrats were southern and LEFT the party to become republicans over those issues??? for someone calling for honesty i find this bit of leaving out the rest of the story as dis-honesty sounds like your truth is also relative
There is NO DOUBT that today's "progressives" are Ctrl-Left power mad totalitarians! Just look at the "Green New Deal" proposed by them; it's ALL about CONTROL over We The People!
If that is what you have been brainwashed to think, then so be it. The best I can do to offer you the facts, which I did, but you'd rather go with some partisan talking point. You can take the horse to the water, but you can't force him to drink.

Perhaps you should attempt to remove your emotional sentiments and look at things objectively:
1. banning books
2. "green agenda" which essentially puts all aspects of life under governmental control
3. assaulting those with "MAGA" hats
4. Assaulting and shouting down opposition speakers
5. Assaulting Christian religion and traditions and replacing those with fidelity to the state
6. Trade deals directed to destroy the middle class
7. "Great Society" which destroyed the traditional family unit and created generational federal dependents
8. "political correctness" designed to diminish opposition thought and expression of free speech
The balance of human subjugation which has occurred in the 20th century began as "altruistic" movements designed to help the poor and workers of a nation. All resulted in enslavement of those populations and genocide.
The "green deal" is essentially levying governmental control on a massive scale that effects every aspect of the economy and individual lives under the guise of "helping the environment".

Rarely will totalitarian movements present their actual agenda to the public, but will disguise actions under the guise of being altruistic and helping the poor, downtrodden, and of course, the environment.
All of these "interventions" require more and more governmental control to achieve, which the public, eager to reach the egalitarian utopia, are more than willing to comply. In doing so, individual liberties are slowly sacrificed to a larger and larger central government until few personal rights remain.
The "New Green Deal" has been called other things in the past like "The Cultural Revolution", "Ground Zero", "Worker's Paradise", ect.............. All started with ideas that sounded as though they would be beneficial to the public, yet ended in slavery and genocide.

Look up how fascism starts. Remind you of anyone? You be all paranoid if it suits you. You walk around suspicious of your fellow Americans. It's a very liberal thing to believe people are capable. As far as I'm concerned, these colors don't run.
