Govt is just as or more powerful than ever before, its not really the current administration or president at a given time though, its more about govt agencies, the people in those, are not term limited, most are lifers, naturally they are going to remain powerful despite who is in office or which party holds power.
I submit much of what appears to be incompetence in government is actually corruption. Our lawmakers are generally not representing us; they were bought off by lobbyists many years ago. Indecent amounts of money causes most of them to not give a flip if sometimes they come off looking incompetent or foolish.
The courts are losing legitimacy as they become more political.
The presidency is losing executive control of the agencies.
The erosion of the rule of law, I must say, comes from the top, regardless of party. Elected leaders are screwing up royally because they break the laws more often than the little people. They would need to be even more brazenly hypocritical than they are now to enforce the laws for the populace but not the rulers.
So lots of laws just get ignored, such as federal marijuana laws ignored by states or state gun control laws ignored by county sheriffs.
On one hand, it's frightening that elections are losing their power because the government is losing its power. On the other hand, the probability that you can get away with just ignoring the law gives you more freedom.
This could have been posted in 1905 and been just as relevant...……….
Government has always been incompetent. Government is losing power because people are losing confidence in government. This is happening all over the world.
