Seven funeral homes are involved in services for the 23 victims, and the community is stepping up to help support families financially, Harris said. Two large corporations have pledged to pay funeral costs but they aren't publicly confirming the move, he said. Churches and civic organizations are among those providing financial support.
Generally funeral homes hold funerals. In this case it looks like 7. Apparently they arent doing it for free as churches, civic organizations and corporations are donating funds. In my experiences when funerals and or wakes/receptions are held at a church it is usually the church attended by the deceased or deceased family member and the church does not charge a fee for its use. It is also members of the congregation the prepare food for the wake, for free.
I live in Alabama. To be fair, there has been a lot monetary help and actual volunteer work contributed to the Tornado Victims of Lee County by churches both large and small here in Alabama and Georgia. This goes on after pretty much all the natural disasters that have occurred here.
A lot of times the work get gets done without the need for publicity. Just say’in.
That is how things are done in my community as well. Churches I have been involve in and I'm sure the majority of churches, take donations from its funds and congregation for communities suffering from natural disasters in our state. Its not 185K but they do what they can and there is no need to publicize it.

I'll post you a list of the largest 36 mega churches in Alabama. You see if you can find what they did to help the victims of the tornado because I can't find anything.
Most churches don't seek publicity for the things they are doing. Plus many, many churches partner with relief organizations such as Convoy of Hope and Samaritans Purse to provide relief during natural disasters. It makes things much more efficient and gets relief to folks quickly.
Lumping all churches together into the Jim Baker or the Dollar guy that needed a new plane (or whatever his name was) bucket is done intentionally by those with an axe to grind.
It's base stereotyping and is the weapon of choice used by small minded racists and bigots the world over.
That's a nice gesture by the Indian Tribe, but $8,000 per funeral - ridiculous.
Yeah, 8 grand is a lot for a funeral. Those Mega-churches charge a lot to use their churches for funerals.
