Congress and POTUS could advocate for and approve a Flat Federal Income Tax.

It was a part of the Ted Cruz platform during the campaign for the Republican nomination in 2016. The Republican primary voters rejected Cruz in favor of Trump.

Congress could have voted to replace the progressive income tax with a flat tax in 2017.

But that’s not what happened. Instead, they doubled the refundable child income tax credit, ensuring more people would not have a Federal tax obligation.

I would like SS modified, so that everyone get exactly the same percentage of $ paid plus interest back. Right now, it favors the low wage earner, as the % return starts far higher than the % at max.

That percentage should be precisely the same.

I recall all those cute old guys with teabags handing from their golf caps in Az, who viewed themselves as the movers/ shakers of the Teaparty. They were very clear- “Don’t touch my SS or Medicare”.

Given their age, they likely paid less than people do today and were more likely to have a spouse who would not have been eligible for SS or Medicare on their own.

Most Conservatives and Liberals hate the tax while loving the benefit.

I think you will find that most tax experts say a flat tax would have to be so high that low income people would have nothing left.

Why do I say 'in many cases they are kids they can't afford' ?...

Because, in data from 2013-2016, the Kaiser Family Foundation found that in 41 states the percentage of overall births covered by Medicaid was 40% or higher (in 24 states it's 50% or higher), with the highest being 72% in New Mexico, and the lowest 27% in New Hampshire:

...and....

Because, in 2013, nationally, 51.3 % of public school students were eligible for free or reduced price lunches:

And yet in 2017, Trump and Congress doubled the refundable Child Tax Credit- thus rewarding those who have dependent children, regardless if they can afford those children.

All else being equal, those without dependent children pay more in taxes - thus subsidizing those with children, regardless of means.

The only fair tax is a flat tax on gross income.

Congress and Trump could have changed the code in 2017 to anything the majority of Congress/ Trump saw fit to do. Instead, it chose to double the refundable Child Tax Credit- thus reducing the Federal Tax obligation for those with dependent children.

Ivanka, representing the Trump Admin, is leading the charge to simultaneously increase wages of child care workers while making child care more affordable with the Federal Government picking up the slack.

Again, when the free market does not produce good outcomes for a majority of a special interest, the Federal Government has a tendency to step in. It makes no diff, who sits the oval or hold the majority.

That’s not how insurance works and both SS and Medicare are Federal insurance programs.
