Growing up, I knew a man who went to Vietnam and fought there, and a man who very intentionally did not go to Vietnam, out of conscientious objection. It's probably a coincidence, and I'm sure they didn't know each-other, but I learned a fair amount from each of them right around the same time. Those years would have been less if either of those men had not been a part of my life. I don't think it's fair to slight someone for avoiding going off to a war that was from the beginning a terrible, terrible idea. Even if its a "good" war, and you don't want to go, you shouldn't have to and you shouldn't have to feel ashamed. The thing with Trump is that he didn't go to Vietnam, but all through the years, he still maintained his jingoism, and his macho America posture. He trades off of it, even though he never actually did it when it was his turn. If you're a Trump supporter, is THAT the "truth" you hold so dear--that he can have skipped out on service without moral objection--only for his own self-interest: the bare, unprincipled base impulse to use his own privilege to let someone else take the bullet? It is very hard for me to see how anyone with conscience can forgive this, but that's beside the point because he hasn't apologized OR sought forgiveness. You can't forgive someone who hasn't asked for it--you can only accept what they've done and be ok with it or reject it but until you do that, you can't rise above it.
I am a highly motivated Trump voter because the Democrats have motivated me up to my eyeballs. I have never been more motivated in my life, because the Democrats are terrifying me.
this is a political forum and one of the reasons some of us participate in POC is we try to understand the perspectives of the 'other side'. The Federalist opinion piece above is a perfect reflection of my thinking. the best I've read so far that explains my thoughts in this political climate.
whether you are on the other side of the aisle or on my side, it is an interesting opinion piece. I would like to hear your thoughts after you read it.
You never voted Democrat before so why would you start now. LOL. You are a loyal follower.
I can't wait to get a dozen progressive Libs on the stage in a debate to see which one can be more whacko than the last one.
Hopefully every American will be watching the craziness.
It will be a race to the bottom.
I'm still waiting to hear about their platform on Jobs, Employment, China, North Korea... I don't think they have one yet.
Well, we saw the race to the bottom on the GOP side in 2016, and we've all seen that we couldn't get any further down than who we as a country are now saddled with.
And Trump's platform has always been about 1 thing - whatever Trump thinks is best for himself
Every time that Trump opens his mouth and his sychophantic supporters applaud makes me want to vote for whoever his opponent is 1000 TIMES. I would think everyone with their mental faculties intact would agree.
Honestly, do you think people care about your one vote?
It's like the "headlines" we see in the blogs these days "Here's what I think of X, Y, Z".
Noe one cares. There are millions of opinion pieces....and have been many million. No matter how many there have been and how much State TV and Radio pushes it, Trump has the lowest approval rating in US History and is rated dead last among ALL Potus's since George Washington.
No opinion piece changes that.
It's not a "side". It's the reality of a person who is corrupt, mean and not capable of doing the job even if he wasn't.
Those are my thoughts anyway. They matter as much as yours or the opinion piece writer. The fact that someone from Texas likes Trump isn't exactly surprising.
Way to miss the point, which is that everytime Democrats get onto this identitarian gibberish, like speaking of their "privilege," and everytime they get into talk of abolishing ICE and extending benefits to people who aren't citizens, they literally push voters to Trump. They even prompt people who otherwise would not vote to show up at the polls and vote against them. But despite this obvious fact, these fools in the party just can't help themselves, and they keep going with the toxic rhetoric.
I say all this as someone who voted for Democrats in 2016 (except for president) and voted all-Democratic except for county sheriff this past Fall. As it stands now, I will not vote for any of these Dem contenders, except possibly for Klobuchar. I will not vote for any Dem who speaks of "privilege," who simultaneously argues for the abolition of ICE and for a pathway to citizenship (effectively, open borders), who takes a hawkish position because Trump takes the opposite, who advances goofy, pie-in-the-sky policy proposals that would destroy the economy and particularly harm working people ("The Green New Deal"). In other words, chances are, I will again be voting third party. I know that eventually, the party will go back to having a big tent out of necessity. I can contribute to quickening that process by withholding my vote from the nutbags, which will eventually open things up for the adults to retake leadership of the party.
Trump has already lost the 2020 election because he and he alone shut down the government in 2018. He lost more than enough followers to already call his campaign all but dead.
And Trump's platform has always been about 1 thing - whatever Trump thinks is best for himself
You must have missed all the news about the Booming economy, record low unemployment, North Korean Nuke talks, China coming to the table, ISIS just got thier azz whipped, wages are up, Minorities are working.
Pretty darn good platform and record of success for Trump.
How come the Dem Nominees never even talk Jobs or the Economy ? They have nothing to offer.
Democrats kill jobs, not make jobs. Democrat Socialist are parasites, they want to feed on the success of the working people.

What would that stage play be called?
