Public opinion has clearly reached a tipping point on this issue. Yet, the GOP remains committed to "protecting the moral fabric of our society" by wasting millions of taxpayer dollars and ruining lives by locking up nonviolent pot users. Even among the GOP voter base, 51% supports legalization, with the strongest opposition of course coming from the Christian Right.

And yes, I know Obama had the opportunity to legalize and didn't, but public opinion wasn't there yet at the time. Today, the Democratic Party has officially endorsed legalization while the GOP is doubling down on prohibition of the "devil's lettuce." Obama did the best he could at the time and that was the Cole memo, which stated that the federal government wouldn't interfere with states that chose to legalize. I can guarantee that had Romney won 2012, we'd still be illegal in all 50 states for recreational and medical expansion wouldn't be near as far along.

So when will the GOP do as John Boehner says and "get out of the way"? Why should the inaccurate and outdated beliefs of religious fundamentalists about this plant "Trump" the facts and popular opinion?

Not even gay marriage had this much support when SCOTUS legalized it in all 50 states.

Why? Money is why. Money plays an even bigger role than fundamentalist religious beliefs.

It won't change until prohibitionists start getting voted out of office. That took a huge step forward late last year when Pete Sessions, Dallas county, TX, got voted out. He had position as a republican committee chairman that allowed him to kill bills before they ever made it to the floor for debate, which he did to every single marijuana related bill that ever crossed his desk.

With him gone, the log jam now has a better chance of some movement, but corrupt money from lobbyists continues to be the primary holdup. More prohibitionists will have to get voted out, on both sides, before the rest of the pack gets the message that holding on to their seat is more valuable than the under-the-table lobbyist money.

Notice that among the 5 worst representatives in regards to marijuana law reform, 2 are democrats:

1: Bob Goodlatte (R-VA)
2: Pete Sessions (R-TX)
3: Henry Cuellar (D-TX)
4: Andy Harris (R-MD)
5: Joe Kennedy III (D-MA)

Quote:
many still seem to be stuck in the “Just Say No” era of the 1980s when it comes to drug policy. But whether they are legalization skeptics, hard-core prohibitionists, or simply using an outdated political calculus on the issue, there are certain representatives who have done an inordinate amount of damage or been the biggest roadblocks for reform.
Pete Sessions' replacement says he won't block cannabis reform:

Quote:
Next year’s House Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern, the replacement for cannabis opponent Pete Sessions, has promised to allow open debate of cannabis reform on the floor of the House, the Boston Globe reports.

Quote:
Pete Sessions was a longtime opponent to cannabis reform and he personally blocked dozens of amendments and bills, including purely medical ones designed to fight the opioid crisis.

It’s coming and it’s way past due the tobacco companies are ready to add thier taint to it, which is once again why it needs to be decriminalized.

Its not their job to get out of the way.
They have all the same rights as the gov. of Ca. to ignore the will of the people. When is the state going to start killing people again ? Its the same argument but different issue is the point, but if its good for democrats, its good for the GOP.
Close that one way street. It isn't going anywhere.

The GOP, led by Trump, is much more likely to allow legalization vs the fake conservative RINOs.

Majority wants to legalize marijuana but the same people want tobacco banned and states are banning vapping and e-cigs.
