Exactly. If the war is truly necessary, the state won't need to force anyone to fight. They'll do so out of self-defense instinct.

Its called citizenship.

Do you expect your country to protect you from foreign invaders?
From domestic threats?
Provide services?

Don't want to do it, you don't have to. But you won't get certain benefits if you don't. There are consequences to every decision. The consequence to this decision simply means you don't qualify for certain benefits. Note, if you truly think that failing to sign up for the selective service is going to prevent the government from conscripting you in the event of war, I have a bridge to sell you. This is what makes this argument silly IMO.

I think the argument is more about the sexism of it when it comes to the eligibility of things like student loans and grants. The fact that male students are punished for not signing up while female students are 100% exempt from that punishment is blatantly sexist. That much is undeniable.

I'm aware of it, it's called selective service.

Don't like it go shoot a moose in Canada. We fortunately have the freedom to move out of the country if we don't like rules here.

OP, why are you upset about this today? Did you get drafted or something?

There's no draft, what does it matter. Back in the 60's and early 70's it was a question of possible life and death. Now it's just paperwork. Who cares?

"Citizenship."

If the country protected me against domestic threats Washington, D.C. would be burned to the ground.

All services should be provided by the free market.

Surely women should be asked to sign up now as well?

"We have rules." Sounds like North Korea.

People who tried to help runaway slaves were considered criminals. Rosa Parks broke the rules.

Statism is cancer.
