"In this “hypothetical” scenario, Carlson ran through a number of things Trump could do so that his base would turn on him — all of which line up with actual Trump administration actions or reported proposals. He noted, for example, that if Trump wanted to lose, he could raise gas taxes, something the administration is reportedly considering and an idea that Carlson said is “so mindless and counterproductive there’s literally no way you could get re-elected after doing it.”

Later, he told Trump he should definitely “go with the gas tax if he secretly wants to retire early and is really sick of the job. If the president did all that, the message would be very clear: he has no idea what he ran on in 2016. He just wants out.”

Proposing cuts to Medicare and E-Verify would also be ways Trump could undermine his re-election chances, Carlson argued, as well as continuing “our pointless military intervention in Syria.” These, again, are not hypothetical scenarios at all."

Food for thought. I wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to be re-elected, but I do think it would be more sporting if he just announced his intention not to run and let others step up, rather than throwing the game. OTOH, it would certainly settle some scores with those in the Republican party who back-stabbed him. Romney, for example, who wants to run so badly I can smell the flop-sweat all the way to my house.

Then again, if he runs, tries to throw the game and gets re-elected anyway, it's like The Producers, lol. I think he just likes the rallies and the campaign trail. He wouldn't be the first, Obama enjoyed that, too.

I really don't think Trump's base will turn on him unless he does something like reverse his transgender military policy, changes the narrative on climate change, or starts nominating pro-choice justices. Something like the gas tax might anger his base but that wont' cause them to abandon him.

Well, he does have a point here.

I don't think he cares. And if he's going down, he's taking the Republican party with him. And why not? They're useless anyway. Paul Ryan backstabbed him big-time. Not to mention Jeff Sessions.

It don't matter if the economy tanks. FDR and maybe Truman were the only incumbents to win re-election during a recession. Trump isn t Truman and he sure as Hell isn t FDR.

If that's what it takes, and Trump really does want to lose the election, he'll tank the economy.

Yup. I remember all of the national "experts" said Obama was toast after the Republican bloodbath in 2010. We all saw what happened two years later.

Many think Trump don't even need to do much. Many were saying we were due for one at the tail end of the Obama days. Ironically many citing that changed their tune when Trump won... Then again Trump foreign economic policy is not really gonna help considering the tariff war and threats of closing off the Mexican border.
