The American Dream was "work hard, you can rise above and be whatever you want" or something like that...with the current cultural climate now it's more like "work hard so you can get that iPod and Audi A8". Materialism...

Hard Work or Work Hard for Materialism or just to support yourself or your family gets hard while the government keeps stealing from you.

That's true...which is why I just want the government to leave me alone.

American Dream - RIP
Don't forget Carter and Clinton.

NUMBER TWO...

If this nation has failed you in any way, I encourage you to find your way back to where your ancestors came from, or your parents, or whatever VISA or boat you came here on. We did just fine before you came, and guess what, we'll do better after you leave.

The fewer people we have here who aren't for the "American Way" the better.

"You're welcome, have a nice day"

Oh god.
Another "love it or leave it" poster. Can I tell you how much I despise these types of posts. Let me inform you lucky gem I'm ain't going anywhere. What I'm looking for is a better future for America. And I'm looking for ideas from the good people of city data to do so.
So I'll give all the "love it or leave it" folks a couple of choices.

1. clear the way for progress
2. Come up with some ideas to improve America
Or 3. Get run over by progress.

America is moving forward with or without you folks.

I guess that means no one disagrees then, if the public says so.

If the American Dream is to stick your hand out and have the government give you something, then I guess FDR would be one of the more highly-rated Presidents by Joe Public.

I refuse to buy into this doom and gloom negative appraisal of the American Dream. I believe that if I work hard and contribute, that my contributions will be rewarded. I believe that for all the freedom and liberties that I enjoy, that I have a responsibility to exercise those freedoms in order to ensure that following generations will have the same opportunities. I believe that I live in a changing world, and that it is up to me to navigate through those changes using my own good sense, if I'm too lazy to do it I shouldn't expect the government to do it for me. I believe that it's right to reach out a hand to help a drowning person, that the individuals who live together in communities can cooperate to solve their shared problems, and that this country is made up of many other people who feel the same as I do. We may not all agree on the direction this country should take, or on many issues, but the real direction of this country is decided when tornadoes strike and people join together to rebuild, when rivers rise and people join together to pile sandbags and hand out hot coffee, when enemies strike and bring down two towers, and people line the streets to pat the backs of police officers and firefighters. Our real direction has always been to rise above adversity, to show the world that we can join together and achieve most anything, that with all the differences between us, all the divisions and dissension, we still peacefully cast or votes on election day, and live with the results, facing tomorrow with hope.
