You do understand that it was the subsequent harassment that she received that led to the settlement? Or is it your argument that people should be harassed by their co-workers?
IMO. the office screwed the pooch on this one. What was her behavior that led up to the alleged harassment? Did she display political photos on her office wall? Most companies dont allow that non-sense at work.
Should people be harassed by co-workers? NO, not in a perfect world. Nor should co-workers be forced to put up with idiots pushing their political agenda on others. The fact that her employer settled doesn't equate to wrong doing. It just means that they felt it was cheaper to fold than to fight. Not surprising given how willing American juries are to award huge settlements regardless of fault.
The only time I ever saw my previous employer go against a minority was when they made a black manager take down his poster of Kaepernick kneeling. That was 2 years ago.. It was the right decision. He can have his beliefs, but he isn't allowed to force them on co-workers. Just as I might enjoy pictures of women wearing wet t_shirts but I am not allowed to post such pictures anywhere at work, including inside my locker.
right. but she's eligible to apply for other jobs with the county.
what are the odds she'll sue if she doesn't get hired? right around 100%, i'd say.
LOL I saw that. And ignored it, because there's no way they're going to re-hire her. She was a competitive employee, hired from an eligible list.
She was a Corrections Technician (because everyone's a "technician"...wait...or a "specialist," even in local government lol)--a popular clerical job, with the minimum educational requirement of a HS diploma to qualify for the test.
These continuous recruitment tests generate packed eligible lists with so many candidates suitable for employment based on test scores alone, that the appointing agency will have a number of applicants from which to choose. And IF she even wants to work within that county again, I doubt she'll be re-hired. Who needs a snot chesting up to superiors when they [gasp!] issue a directive to an employee?
There are reasons she had to resign as a condition of that settlement--and they'll get around.
They were harassing her for being black? In Oregon? LOL.
Or were they harassing her after she harassed somebody first about a Blue Lives Matter poster?
Just asking. Are you really allowed to start an argument and then claim harassment when the other person argues back? That's not how it is supposed to work is it?
Actually, yes, you are allowed to start an argument, and that does not entitle people to harass you.
Blue Lives Matter movement “co-opts” the Black Lives Matter movement and "repurposes it to shift focus to law enforcement — a chosen profession, not a racial identity
However, the issue is the fact that she made a complaint to supervisors and she was subsequently racially harassed.
My husband once wore a shirt to work on "causal Friday" which pictured a cartoonish KKK clansman getting hung from a tree. Some of his white co-workers got "offended" by his t-shirt and complained to HR.
According to the white people - they were not in the KKK, so my husband felt they shouldn't be offended and it was nothing against whites - just the KKK. HR made him change the shirt and he was told never to wear it again and their policy was changed that stated any "political or controversial" displays were prohibited.
The flag was/is politically controversial. Because it is Oregon and I'm sure there aren't many black employees there, they did the silly thing and got sued. That's what happens when supervisors and/or HR are silly. She should have gotten more IMO.
The Blue Lives flag and "movement" are directly contradictory to Black Lives Matter. And even though I'm not a huge supporter of BLM, it is condescending and potentially racially insensitive to have up any other sort of "lives matter" paraphrenalia. Blue Lives wouldn't even be a thing if it weren't for Black Lives. White people often aren't very creative when it comes to "movements" and often steal ideas from black people. Other people do it too but "Blue Lives" and "All Lives" all are basically saying F- black people. We care about our own, not you - to a large amount of black people. And the HR at this place should have done what they were supposed to do and made him remove the flag.
On the 'picture of her office' I'd like to know where it came from. You all are posting a picture that has no source and acting like it is hers when it more than likely is not.
I've worked with a lot of black people and no one ever had teenager sorts of decorations in their offices. Whites did'nt/don't either.
