The longest-serving Republican in the Iowa Legislature said he's leaving the party, in part because of his disapproval with President Donald Trump. Rep. Andy McKean.
Another one woke up. Join the many who have realized what’s going on !
Do you honestly believe that either major party cares about the middle-class or poor? Actions speak louder than words and from where I am sitting the democrats have absolutely screwed the working class as hard or harder than the GOP.
I don’t disagree with independent- as that’s my choice. But the flip from being a trumpette is a good thing, maybe others will follow. They don’t need to change party - they just need to wake up and smell the coffee .
Any independent can choose which party to caucus with.
It appears to me that McKean made a tactical choice.
He could either stay Republican and never hope to get any of his legislation passed in the House, or he could go independent and caucus with the Democrats, which would vote for his bills for Iowans.
The guys who are very senior like him know how the House works like the backs of their hands. They became seniors by taking care of their constituents back home first and foremost. There's always some federal jobs to be protected, some federal projects that need to get landed in their district, and other things that will affect everyone who lives in the district.
So, in the end, the voters keep them because they bring home the bacon time after time. For everyone, whether the voters are Democrats or Republicans.
The guys like McKean don't need to follow their party line because the voters will cross it to vote for them.
They tend to drive their party purists nuts, but it's the purists who never last through 20-30 years of elections.

Actually, McKean is a member of the Iowa (state of Iowa) House of Representatives, not the U.S. House of Representatives that is part of the U.S. Congress.
Additionally, McKean is switching from being a Republican to being a Democrat (not an Independent)....which, within the Iowa House of Representatives, will move him from being in the majority to being in the minority, as Republicans will still have the majority after his switch.
