It's only been the last decade or so, that men have been urged to shave their armpits. Again, to serve the interests of shaving/hair removal companies.

Marketing and advertising (including messaging for politicians) is my field.

Shaving goes back to ancient Egypt when they used flint and then copper blades. Since that time, fashion has gone from hairy to shaven back to hairy and then shaven, etc. It's a cycle that isn't new.

Some of what women were doing in America with regard to shaving had to do with the changing style of clothing. As more skin was shown, shaving became more popular. And yes, companies capitalized on that.

It's a cultural thing. In France they wouldn't look twice. Most people here aren't fond of it, I don't think.

Shaving may go back to ancient Egypt, but until the 1920's, women in the United States didn't find their armpit hair offensive, and that was due to marketing. European women didn't start to shave their armpits until much later (like decades later).

Companies began the "female armpit hair" is disgusting marketing campaign before the roaring 20's and the changes in clothing styles. And the change in clothing styles occurred in Europe as well, but armpit hair wasn't seen as disgusting there. Was Sophia Loren's armpit hair disgusting?

This seems important to you. Regardless of origin, you think it's a result of a corporate marketing campaign and I think it has to do with more skin and sleeveless fashions, most Americans today find hairy armpits disgusting....regardless of whose armpit it is.

That this is where we're at with our culture shouldn't offend.

Why would this be a political issue? Seems like Health & Beauty.

It's Nike. Virtue Signaling which is political is a core value.

I suppose if you were going for the shock value, which I don't know that they were it might make sense.

A Trump shirt is more offensive than a little armpit hair.

It is important to me. I'm not offended by hairy pits or hairless pits, but it was a result of corporate marketing. If it had more to do with skin and sleeveless fashions, then European women would have been shaving decades earlier as well. And most Americans today find female hairy armpits disgusting, but men only started shaving their pits about a decade ago, and a substantial number of men still don't.
