Iran is strategically important to Russia through its ties to Syria. Syria provides Russia with a warm-water port--which is why the Russians have been Syrian allies for half a century.

And also, Russia is Iran's proxy in the 1400-year-long Sunni/Shiite war, just as the US is Saudi Arabia's proxy.

There is no crisis! The USS Lincoln was scheduled to be in this area long before this nonsense about "Israeli intelligence has given us a report of Iranian plans to….blah, blah, blah….", the Secretary of the Navy has already admitted this. This entire episode only proves that these people cannot be trusted any more than the neocons of Bush, Cheney and Rice could be trusted.
