President LBJ now has a ship named after him. A new stealth destroyer.

Johnson wore a silver star on his lapel, signifying bravery in action during WW2. The action never happened, though. He just thought it would be better if people thought he was a war hero of one sort or another.
There are lot of reasons to not like Johnson. In fact, he was so bad that in my mind it taints the memory of JFK for selecting Johnson as a man who could replace him. Someone should have stopped this naming of a ship after Johnson.

LBJ was a politician during ww2 and was not in the service. He did go on a bombing mission in which the bomber came under fire and LBJ actually manned one of the .50 cal guns. That being said, he was not in the service, as were JFK, Reagan (non combat), Nixon, Ford, Bush, and Carter.

Ford, Bush and JFK were directly in harms way and saw active combat. The Hawaiian Senator (Daniel Inouye) won the Medal of Honor and Bob Dole was awarded the silver star. Despite being in different parties, they were friends and respected one another.

I would offer that Inouye would be the politician most fitting of having a ship named after him from that era, even though he served in the infantry. Bush, Carter, JFK, Ford, and Nixon were all navy men. I believe that Bush, Reagan, Ford, Carter and JFK have all had ships named after them. Carter is the only living president to have a ship named after him; he was a submariner and also has a sub named after him.

Just looked it up- Daniel Inouye has a destroyer named after him. Quite the hero he was indeed- kind of a Japanese Audie Murphy.

The USS George H.W. Bush.
The USS Ronald Reagan.

And JFK's pick of LBJ as his running mate was purely political, too. So forget that tainting of his memory krap.

Yes the same President who is quoted "I don't care if that ship goes down to the bottom of the ocean and every sailor dies." In regard to the attack on the USS Liberty.

He was a piece of **** human being and absolutely the last person deserving of a ship to be named for him.

No president is perfect, including great ones like LBJ.

Johnson was indeed a commissioned officer in the USNR.

Commissioned as a LCDR in 1940, ordered out of active duty by Roosevelt in mid-1942. Finally resigned his commission in 1964.

One can only assume that you are being sarcastic. LBJ was also a hard core racist. He escalated our involvement in Vietnam. He micromanaged the war and was an idiot.
