That's a stupid bromide. The mass media do more to obstruct and interfere with our democracy than everything else combined. The media are more powerful than the President and Congress, and your pro-media fetish means that a tiny minority rule the country with no checks or balances.
Ironically, the Citizens United opinion that leftist morons hate is the only thing protecting the fake news media from being shut down.
"Which comes closer to your point of view: the news media is the enemy of the people, or the news media is an important part of democracy?" Polling Report

Trump doesn't have to do anything. The presstitutes are doing it to themselves. They sold their souls to the Demwits. When the dust settles from Spygate and there have been dozens of indictments, most of them will disappear in the mists of time. Too many great, new media sources nowadays like The Epoch Times and Washington Examiner and NewsMax. Plus citizen journalists who don't have to worry about getting fired.
Amazing how Trump has managed to turn so many Americans against the First Amendment.
Defending the Free Press
Expression, and the right to publish it, is a human right. And yet, President Trump continues to disregard this
The media is not the enemy of the people. The enemy of the people is ignorance — obliviousness to truth, ignoring it or having incredulity about it.
There is no way to have a functioning democracy without a thriving press. One of the great missions of the press is to hold power accountable by revealing what those in power would rather hide. Corruption depends on concealment. Accountability hinges on disclosure. The founders of this country knew that. I also think Donald Trump knows that and that he is purposely attempting to prune that function.
Trump genuinely believes in the concept of “fake news” because he was a dealer of fake news. There is a part of him who believes that some anonymous sources don’t exist, because he was a source, pretending to be someone else, so he as a source didn’t really exist.
But perhaps more ominously, an August Ipsos poll found that a plurality of Republicans, 43 percent, agree that
The weaker the media, the strong the demagogue. The road to authoritarianism winds its way through darkness.
The responses from the Trump supporters on this thread, illustrate exactly the ignorance that the OP described, that would afflict the whole country, if the free press was not able to do its essential work.

So, according to the op, calling out the lamestrem media for their lies is "unAmerican"?
I weep for the future
Drinking the tears of those whining about the MSM for exposing Trump as the insecure narcissist bigot and prolific liar that he is, tastes really good with a twist of lime

The press did it to themselves. They have no one to blame but their misleading bias journalism.
Besides, the President has just as much right to exercise his 2nd amendment as anyone else.
I agree, this so called free press is full generally corupt people that are acting like activists pretending to be reporters.
