This one literally could be a looming menace! The Seattle mayor and council seem ready to give the ok to the scooters. They are already in other US cities. They boast speeds of up to15 mph. You just know that tech-savvy millennials will be coming up with 'hacks' to make them even faster.
The average human walking a brisk pace does about 4 mph. And now we're supposed to share the sidewalks with 15 mph vehicles???
I fear the politics of this are not favorable. Conservatives don't care about safety issues. Safety concerns are always from the behest of liberals, whether it was requiring seatbelts for cars, helmets for bikes, or restrictions on guns. But in this case, liberals don't seem to care either. The far-left Seattle city council is on board, for example.
Since these scooters can be used on a whim, helmets aren't required. 15 mph, and NO HELMET!! The companies say that helmet requirements are impractical. They 'forget' to mention that it would cut into their profits. And no license or training is required of users.
I say this thing needs to be nipped in the bud! What do you think?

Most, actually probably all, pollsters do this. It's standard practice. It provides more info about the nature of responses. Why would you not be a fan of getting more info?
They are all over the place where I live. People ride them in the street most of the time but it's on residential streets.
The vagrants and criminals like them because they can grab your bag as they ride by.
I hate the skateboarders on the sidewalks. They are far worse. Fortunately, our sidewalks are in such a bad state of disrepair, like the roads, that no one can go very fast.
We had them in our city for a while. Some of the things I saw were examples of Darwin. Parents and young children on them together with no helmet on public streets, people riding them in and out of traffic on both streets and sidewalks regardless of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, severe injuries from the wheel getting into a hole or crack in the concrete, death from head hitting concrete or getting hit by vehicle through the fault of the rider. Our city put a stop to them until laws or regulations could be enacted for rider, pedestrian, and vehicle safety can be implemented. Bicycles are legal road vehicles with some restrictions, laws governing their use on roads, and requirements for equipment for when riding after dark. These scooters should be required to meet those same requirements as bicyclist. Another issue that will come soon, if it hasn’t already, is liability. When, not if, someone is injured or killed you know someone is going to try to file a lawsuit against these companies as they become more financially successful. Each state has their own laws regarding liability and lawsuits.

Several good points here. And note that since this is done as a public/private partnership, the taxpayer could end up on the hook for liability.
I'm really not too worried about it. They had them in Raleigh for a while, nobody got killed or seriously injured to my knowledge.
The biggest problem was people dumping them all over the place, creating a tripping hazard.
