Read the quote above. Walmart executive clearly stated they will try to source it from "other countries". I guess one of those might be USA, but all Trump has accomplished is to raise prices to the US Consumer, and to potentially move some of our trade deficit from China to some other countries. If Trump knows one thing, it's about deficit spending....

It was all fun and games until it hits WallyWorld. Shake it off, you can cover the added costs with all that cash you're saving from Trump's tax cuts, right? Right?

If Clinton, Bush, and Obama has done their jobs, Trump would not be faced with this.

Your contention is like blaming the fireman for putting out the fire.

Then we need to have tariffs on all low-wage countries. Simple.

American workers don’t export much to China. We have a massive trade deficit with China.

Should we do that, the cost of American consumer goods will soar and US exports will be subjected to retaliatory tariffs, thus destroying the market for huge amounts of American goods worldwide. Meanwhile, while our global economic influence declines, China will vastly increase its soft power globally and shape international trade in its own interests to the exclusion and detriment of America. I would say its a lose-lose, but its actually a lose-lose-lose for America.

We've tried anti-competitive protectionism before. It doesn't work.

Exactly. The word "try" means a whole lot of nothing. Think about all the people who are trying to quit smoking or trying to find a job.

You are aware that doing this would require severe relaxation of our environmental laws.

I wouldn't under estimate Walmart's ability to suss out a supplier in some backwater place to save a few pennies on their acquisition costs. It's pretty much what their entire empire was built upon.

Do we have a trade surplus with most low wage nations? If not, then why is it a problem if we lose those markets? Are third world countries really buying lots of our Chevy’s and Fords?

China is already doing this, and we are playing into their hands with our existing trade policies.

Protectionism works amazingly well. How do you think that Western Europe and America became dominant in the first place? They didn’t do it with “free trade,” they did it with ruthless mercantilism. Now China is playing the same game, and we have been playing into their hands for two decades.
