Uhhh...yeah. Morehouse. It’s not a black only school. It’s an HBCU. Not the same thing.
Hmmm. An Ivy man.
Probably respects that Morehouse tradition and legacy which runs REALLY deep in the black community as you surely know. He gets to ingratiate himself with the HBCU upper crust which is a pretty clubby clan as a bonus. Love the HBCU folks, but they’ve got some serious snobs over there. Lol
Not to mention that he can rub his HBCU buddy’s faces in it! Now they’ll try to outdo him.

Well, Smith is a Alpha Phi Alpha man...so yeah, he's probably rubbed shoulders with a lot of Morehouse and Howard people...
I don’t typically play the lottery. 70 percent of all lottery winners lose all their money. The irresponsible lot who had large debts will likely be in the same position with other debt in a few years. Paying off a student loan teaches you about budgeting, credit, taxes, and general responsibility. Having someone take over a responsibility that you promised to carry has no nobility. You don’t learn anything when other people do things for you. That’s why little kids often insist on doing things themselves. They know that’s how you learn. Unfortunately, these young adults forgot that important childhood lesson.
One act of kindness to help graduates with a leg up, and in your narrow mind it leads to gloom and doom. Suddenly they won't know a thing about budgeting, credit, taxes and general responsibility - even though being on their own will teach them that anyway. And many have probably already learned it.
And somehow you know that among them are 'the irresponsible lot who had large debts'. I get it - they're black kids and you resent them getting this freebie.
If you ever fall off that high horse of yours, I hope you land hard on your head. It might knock some common sense, if not compassion, into you.
I wonder if there are tax consequences. If loans are forgiven the IRS counts that amount as taxable income. Or since these gifts exceed the yearly limit for gifts for an individual, will some part of it be taxable?
I don’t mean to be negative. I think it’s great but like game show winners, nobody escapes
Federal and state taxes.
It's apparently a grant to the school, possibly with a tax break.

Alpha Phi Alpha:
"Founded: December 4, 1906, Cornell University, NY
Motto: First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All
Headquarters: Baltimore, MD
Symbol: Great Sphinx of Giza
Aims: Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love For All Mankind"
It appears Mr. Smith took that motto and aims to heart.
What a selfish act. He will get his tax break, feel good about himself and get some positive media attention. The consequence is that he taught these kids they are not responsible for themselves and they will be bailed out in their lives - he's probably ruined several of them for the rest of their lives.

You guys are just too funny, casting aspersions on a man you know nothing about, and kids you know even less about. LOL. But I guess some people gotta find fault with everything, even something as positive and life-changing as this.

More like BDS. There's no other logical explanation for such animus.
