Detecting crimes before they happen? This sounds like something out of Orwell all right:

Actually, not quite. Have you read Orwell? This is more like "Minority Report."

Thanks, interesting post.

It seems based on people's comments, right?
I thought it was more invasive, like analyzing people's genes or faces

So why is everyone complaining about China? The only difference is that in the West the surveillance is more or less occult.

What's wrong with being a threat to myself? It is my business, one might think. If I decide to kill myself, that's only my business.

Part Minority Report, part 1984, all tyranny.

The "prevent future crime" thing is all Minority Report for sure, but the "base threat of future crime on thought/word crime" is pure 1984.

The TAPS Act is every dystopian nightmare made real. Anyone not horrified at the prospect needs their head examined.

Paraphrasing Alan Moore:
Quote:
The truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? School shootings, terrorist attacks, and countless marginalized antagonists shrieking from the rooftops. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic, you turned to the US government...Leviathan. They promised you order, they promised you peace, and all they demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent.
And letting an abomination like the TAPS Act happen....yeah, Americans will need only look into a mirror to find the source of the future enslavement.

Threat Assement, Prevention and Safety (TAPS)

Sounds like thought police to me. With the things people express in social media they could easily arrest thousands of people.

Its amazing what people will accept when safety and security are the justifications used to promote them to the public!

Can someone paraphrase what it is? Going on that site or even googling it seems like good ways to end up on a list...
