As a Marine he should know. Our Military defends the constitution, but aren't protected by much of it.
Freedom of speech is one of the first things we who served sacrificed when we took our oath. There are many freedoms we gave up while we served.
Something those who never served can't fathom.
Truth. I can't count how many times various drills yelled at us, "You're defending a democracy, but you ain't serving in one!"
They are protected just fine. Some of us have professions that carry behavior clauses. Many in sports, medical professions, law, military, law enforcement, and public health or government have these clauses.
As do pretty much every corporation of any significant size.
You are free to say nasty things, but corporations are free to fire you for it.
It is something pretty much everyone can fantom. Such comments are not tolerated at the workplaces, of educational institutions either, so there is nothing unique to the military about it.
I sure couldn't get away with it in my workplace.

People are stupid. Why put hateful rants on your easily identifiable social media account for the world to see?
It’s just letting people know that you’re a fellow travelers.
Social media has seemingly made people a lot stupider.
I don't think social media has made people more stupid. It's exposing many stupid people. Those persons were always stupid. Today we get to see their stupidity on display.

It's not changing anyone's mind
Why put hateful rants on social media for the world to see? Because said persons are crazy enough to seek that kind of attention. For them, social media is like the microphone they never had. They can finally say what they want to say. Alot of people are stupid. And social media definitely is exposing this kind of stupidity. On the other hand, I don't think it was just that man's stupidity. I also think he's the kind of person who won't understand consequences until you put them in his face. He likely the kind of person whom you could tell him "you better not do that, or this will happen", and he'll say "bring it on, I'll do whatever I want". He probably knew what the consequences might be, but probably didn't care.

Plus, if you cannot take orders from or work with all kinds of people, you really shouldn't be in the military in the first place.
I watched a documentary many years ago, possible from 2004. It was about life in the military. I think it was the Navy. There was a guy in there who was getting kicked out due to his racism. He basically said that he couldn't help it. He said that he came from a small town in Oklahoma and wasn't used to dealing with Blacks or other races of people". To me that was basically a cop out.
