True. Establishment Republicans have become more like the old Democrats. Democrats have become active Socialists. So we now have two choices. Full blown craziness, or lesser craziness.
I wouldn't call people who are hell bent on turning America into a Christian theocracy anything less than full blown crazy.
Yet the country is doing great under the Emperor. However, what has he done to be like an Emperor? Circumvent Congress, and the COURTS? How? What specifics? Or are you just another person suffering from TDS?
The 60s hippie movement was a generational "tantrum" among those raised by the world war 2 generation as a reaction to the order and regimen of the social stability of the 1950s. Essentially a regression to childhood, in which responsibility and rules were discarded in favor of acting and reacting to any situation by seeking maximal, immediate personal gratification.
The hippie movement, which was a selfish, hedonistic pursuit of self gratification had consequences. The devastating expansion of recreational drugs, the decline of the family, and the abandonment of moral guidance through religion were casualties of that movement.

The 60s were essentially a second Renaissance. Like the first renaissance, there was a flowering of art, music, poetry and architecture. Also, a willingness to challenge traditional religious and societal conventions. Were there excesses? Sure, but that's what happens when you increase the diversity of thought; some good ideas and some bad ideas. But without taking the risk, you remain straight-jacketed in old ways of thinking.
Good things: civil rights, women's rights (and freedom of men and women from traditional gender roles), gay rights, some practices borrowed from eastern religions and, of course, rock and roll.
Bad things: drug addiction, civil unrest and increase in unplanned pregnancies
Sad thing; that anti-materialism of the 60s gave way to "greed is good" attitude of the 80s

That there was a need for civil unrest was the bad part, not the civil unrest itself.

Good well balanced post. The '60s were a mixed bag. Some good, some not so good. But I was there and I still have a little soft spot for that time. Like Jerry Garcia said: "It was like a window opened up and then it slammed shut."
They think they can just breed out racism. Stupid idiots. Mexico would be a ****ing utopia if that were true.
