Up until about a few years ago it's been average. I don't mind paying more if it were going to roads but a lot of it is going to mass transit and the State Police.

I swear the roads have become WORSE in PA since the Gas Tax increase. I bicycle, so see them up close and personal. It is a minefield.

Oh well, that's up to CA and it's voters to decide.

Ironically things like gas and sales tax etc. are one way the state can get tax money out of the huge numbers of people that operate in the "cash economy" sector of CA. Some of them make a substantial amount of money too so it's not like they wouldn't have any state tax bill

Good for them. I keep hearing how great CA is and how that state props the country up. They are leading by example, and once the rest of the country see's how great CA is doing we can follow.

Gas is far more expensive in other countries. It's still cheaper in California than it is in Canada and especially Europe. But I could see if you live in a low wage Red State, you would complain if gas prices were raised, especially because of taxes.

Those gas taxes are flat amounts and thus would be deemed "regressive" as they impact the poor more.

With that said, California has huge numbers of working poor, they just also happen to have some very high incomes to pull up the average and of course housing costs there gobble that right up.

Timing for this could be interesting though in conjunction with the 20% or so rate increase that just went into effect in CA for electricity.

The extra $20 a month cost for electricity, plus another $30 a month in gas tax might not sound like much to some but for others it's a big deal. Will Smith won't blink but the lady that does his laundry and guy that keeps his estate nice sure will.

it will affect the lower income folks a lot more.. I don't drive much so it has limited impact on me. However, this will have a knock on effect with the prices of everything else. Perhaps consumption will decrease.

It's all the other laws and stupidity. The gas tax is just the most glaring.
