No, you're not old enough, because you can't even remember it correctly.

Britain did not hand over Hong Kong to China.

Britain leased Hong Kong from China and the lease expired.

Under international law, Chinese law and British law, China had no legal obligation or duty to extend or renew the lease.
No. HK island and Kowloon was a British colony ceded in perpetuity. The New Territories had been leased from China and China voiced their intent not to extend the lease, meaning that much of HK's infrastructure for electricity, water, waste, etc would fall into Chinese control and they would have to set up a border around Kowloon. It would have been a colossal undertaking and so they opted to return HK back to China.

IMHO they should have given HK'ers a vote on it, but that's over and done with.

US aircraft carrier always makes port call to Hong Kong, i.e. USS Ronald Reagen made port call to Hong Kong in November 2018. In fact, US naval group always visits the port city before and and after 1997. It seems nobody knows such fact.

But if the extradition law to China passes, any US military personnel who visits Hong Kong can be detained by HK police on the request of the Chinese court. As long as the Chinese court presents some very preliminary evidence, that US military personnel will be extradited to China.

Based on such risk, the US Consulate, the Canadian Consulate, the British Consulate told the HK government that they have grave concern about their citizens who reside or on transit in the City.

EU High Commissioner in HK even issued a "demarche" protest note to the HK government on this extradition bill.

So who is embarrassing who? In fact, it is China which embarrasses HK by forcing HK to pass such a stupid law.

China is Hong Kong's problem. It is not Hong Kong's solution.

Before 1997, Singapore's growth rate and GDP per capita were lower than Hong Kong's. But now it is way ahead of Hong Kong.

Why? Singapore became an independent country after British left. But Hong Kong transformed from a British colony to a Chinese colony.

Every year China exported about 55,000 "low end" population to Hong Kong. Low end is a term invented by the Chinese Communist Party which means "undesirable" -- those who are have-not -- the truly proletariats. Big cities like Beijing and Shanghai regularly kicked out these low end population by just bulldozing the slum where they live. Then they kick them all to Hong Kong.

The difference being that China always owned Hing Kong and the British were merely given a 99 year lease in 1898 after the Second Opium War, which China lost.

Britain did negotiate a clause in the 1997 handover, which stated China should allow Hong Kong at least 50 years of self rule before imposing any direct rule, however it looks like this is now being ignored.

Due to the geographival location of Hong Kong in relation to China, and the fact China is an extremey powerful country, military action is not an option, however trade may be lost and if China reacts in a brutal way then sanctions could even be imposed by the west which would harm the Chinese economy and seriously harm China's world status.

The best option for China is to simply drop the legislation and let Hong Kong have a degree of autonomy.

Nope... Then the people of Hong Kong would start beetching about being Americans... You can never make people happy... Heck, half of America are not happy being American!!

Maybe in the worst case situation, we can do an one for one trade. One democracy loving Hong Kong citizen for one socialist loving American citizen.

I wish the people of HK well, but this isn't an American issue or priority.

Looks like we have one of China's 50 Cent Army soldiers in our midst. Must have gotten tired of trolling C-Milk & serpentza (ADV China) on Youtube.

The only law that is currently under review in Congress is the "Hong Kong Human Right and Democracy Act". Its main content is that Chinese and Hong Kong officials will be punished if the Extradition Law is passed in Hong Kong. The term of punishment includes denial of visa to them and their families. Their and their families' assets in U.S. will be frozen.

There has been a more important "Hong Kong Policy Act" that has been dictating the relationship between U.S. and Hong Kong since 1992. It may be revoked if China continues to disrespect Hong Kong's unique status.
