This fall a house committee will hold a hearing on granting D.C. full statehood. Do you support that and an end to their taxation without representation? Or do you side with McConnell who opposes it solely because it would likely give more power to Democrats?
If we want DC folks to have representation in Congress & the Senate we can give the land back to Maryland. There is no reason to create a new State with only 61 square miles of land.
Absolutely flat out NO! The District of Columbia is supposed to be "neutral ground" where the States can meet to jointly oversee the Federal government. It should not be an entity equal to the States, because then there is no unbiased territory where the States can meet.
Of course, there is the whole "taxation without representation" argument, which I do agree has merit. But the solution is obvious to anyone who has an understanding of how our Congress was originally intended to function, at least before the 17th Amendment mucked things up. It's simple: the House of Representatives represents PEOPLE and the Senate represents STATES. Thus, there should be Congressmen, the number of whom would be based on Washington's population, who would be elected to represent the people who live there. (Sure, they'd all be Democrats; but that's the way the cookie crumbles.) But D.C. should never have Senators, because D.C. is not a State and it should never be one.
I support voting rights. Turn the DC Delegate into a Congressperson.
