50 Years of Shame: How Journalists Protected Ted Kennedy After Chappaquiddick

By Scott Whitlock | July 16, 2019 7:00 AM EDT

Thursday marks 50 years since Ted Kennedy, the liberal Democrat from Massachusetts, drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island and left Mary Jo Kopechne to drown in the back seat. For decades, journalists and the TV networks downplayed the incident and portrayed the senator as the victim.

Despite the circumstances, New York Times correspondent James Reston’s initial coverage in 1969 framed the story as a "Kennedy family" tragedy, rather than as a tragedy for the Kopechne family.
(snip)
One of the most galling examples of media revisionism came from journalist Charles Pierce in the January 5, 2003 Boston Globe magazine profile of Kennedy. Though he warned that Kennedy lost his “moral credibility” to be president, the mostly sympathetic profile cheered the Democrat’s work to vastly expand the welfare state. Pierce infamously wrote: "If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age."
(snip)
How far did liberal journalists go in order to explain away Chappaquiddick? In this shocking quote (selected by the Media Research Center as the worst quote of 2009), Discover magazine's Melissa Lafsky wrote a piece for the Huffington Post suggesting that Kopechne might see her death as a necessary sacrifice:

"Mary Jo wasn’t a right-wing talking point or a negative campaign slogan....We don’t know how much Kennedy was affected by her death, or what she’d have thought about arguably being a catalyst for the most successful Senate career in history....[One wonders what] Mary Jo Kopechne would have had to say about Ted’s death, and what she’d have thought of the life and career that are being (rightfully) heralded. Who knows — maybe she’d feel it was worth it. "

Everybody protected Ted Kennedy. But when he lamented at the time (instead of summoning help) that he'd never be president, he was right.

And it wasn't just reporters. Along with his cousin, summoned instead of professionals, who dove in to try to save MJK, a Massachusetts government official (who, coincidentally, died a few days ago) did the same. With no success, all three stood around and chatted--about Ted--while MJK was still alive and struggling to breathe. The coroner's report says it all: the air pocket, her position in full rigor mortis...how long it took for her to die.

A drunk Ted Kennedy left a young woman to die a horrific death in an overturned car in Poucha Pond--and it haunted, and defined, his life and his political career.

She didn’t where she was going and drove off the bridge. Kennedy knew the island too well to have done that. Once everyone realized that Kopechne left all of her personal items, including her hotel room keys back at the cottage, it was totally clear what she and Kennedy drove off to go do.

This is the reason why her family never talked publicly about what happened.
How do you know Kennedy wasn’t in the car?

If the sons of bootleggers can achieve the highest of offices in the country without a
peep from the opposing parties than all you Trump bashers should learn to keep your squawkers shut.

There’s no evidence putting him in it. None. Only his claim, and he had good reasons to lie.

Damn these folks are desperate for a Democrat bout of bad behavior, and all they can find is Trump!

Lol…...
"I'm serious, Chappaquiddick?"

"Thursday marks 50 years since Ted Kennedy...."

We KNOW how many libs DETEST it when history is brought up ONLY if it is against one of the own BUT, it was OK for the dems to dig up when Trump and Romney were 8-10 years old!

As many times you have been debunked, I am surprised the DNC still pays you to be here!

They made a damned idol of him.

Those in the media who have sold their souls will all be held accountable for their deeds and it won't be pretty. Hope it was worth their financial gain to do so because that's all they've got.

And as Barack Obama said, He was a champion for those who had none. Tell that rot to Mary Jo Kopechne's parents.

Chappaquiddick stands today as the best example of a miscarriage of justice, and the influence of wealth and the Kennedy name. Even now, 50 years later, the AP tweets a one-sentence "this day in history" summary, about what sounds like an evil car which, of its own accord, went off a pier.

That TK continued to haunt The Hill wasn't an outrage, it was an abomination. More concerned about his political career, he stumbled past homes in the area, and rounded up the Kennedy Machine for himself instead of getting help for MJK.

He left her to drown in that car, and she ended up dying an agonizing, protracted death--suffocating as she ran out of air.

Yes, that's an abomination.
