P.S. I guess we were Russias lackeys during ww2?

Same deal here. Even Israel is now allied with Saudi Arabia because of their mutual enemy, Iran.
We needed the Russkies in the war against Hitler. Why do we need the Saudis? Are we at war with Iran?

I thought we were no longer dependent on Saudi oil.

Remember, Hitler never attacked the US, other than landing a couple of spies from a U-boat.

Iran is a threat to our ally Israel, and to much of the rest of the mid-east. Their economy is a shambles, and the commonly sought cure for that is expansion into foreign lands.

I was in Saudi during the 1990's (twice) with the US Air Force. Didn't spend much time in the city (Riyadh), but went there a few times. This was before the off-base restrictions were implemented.

We had strict rules about behavior. No displaying of crosses or any other non-Muslim religious symbols. No drinking on base or anywhere else. Be polite (which is good advice anywhere).

Saudi Arabia is a very rigidly-ruled country, with strict laws. I had no problem with that since we all knew that (and still do). Why are we still allies? Oil, and Saudi is an enemy of Iran.

Really has nothing to do with oil. It's just, if we don't become their allies, we risk either Russia or China being the ally, and do you really think that is a wise decision? This is why most deals are made, not so much as being trading partners with someone, but to keep the competition away.
