WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats approved legislation Thursday to raise the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade, to $15 an hour, showcasing the progress and challenge of a signature issue for the party ahead of the 2020 election.
The increase, which would boost pay for some 30 million low-wage workers, is intended as one answer to income inequality. A longshot project of liberal advocates just a few years ago, the $15 minimum is standard practice at some leading U.S. corporations. But passage was assured only after centrist Democrats, reluctant to embrace the party's left flank, won adjustments, including a slower six-year phase-in of the wage. It was just the latest reminder of the sway moderates hold over the party's policy decisions.
Even though the bill's chances in the Republican-controlled Senate are slim, and President Donald Trump is unlikely to sign it into law, the outcome is important because it puts $15 into the campaigns as the new benchmark for debate.
Be interesting to see how this one plays out for companies like Walmart, etc. I’m sure they will be backing Trump.
Then again Trump might be for it I’d be surprised if he wasn’t after all if he did run on the idea of helping the American workers make more money.
If poor people are smart they will move to a low COL area and that $15/hour will have them living pretty rich.
That's also gonna bump a lot of folks off the welfare rolls. May not be a good thing though because you lose everything if you are even $1 over the limit.

Walmart starting pay is $11/hour. In 6 years time (when this kicks in) I wager the pay will be at that point.
The big hit will be to restaurants with waiters/waitresses. Tipped workers will also get $15/hour instead of that $2+.
Nevertheless this bill still has to get past the Senate and signed into law.

Don't count on it. In fact, big corporations like Walmart will love this, because it's a sure fire way to kill off all the smaller mom and pop stores because they won't be able to meet the demand. And then when that happens, they will raise the price of the products because there will be no competition to counter offer, and then all of those people making 15 bucks an hour, will be right back where they started from thanks to inflation.
Political move, will never pass the senate or be passed into law. Which is something the Dems are very aware of. They just want the talking points.
Perhaps they should tell us what the people on a fixed income, the disabled those on Social Security will do. Given i think the avg SS check is 1100 a month and everything from rent to food will go up if anything like this actually passed. Millions go from being poor to instant poverty.

I hope it doesn’t kill off mom and pop stores. It’s like forcing smaller churches to pay taxes, I’m all for making mega churches pay it but not the smaller ones. Then again many mom and pop places have only a handful of employees.

That my guess it’s that this is more political move then anything else. Both parties like to use this trick in upcoming elections. That’s what the conservatives did they voted for the most extreme candidate they could.
All in all I’m more of a fan of a living wage then an all across the board raise.
There will be a much bigger hit to restaurants and any other business that uses tipped workers.
Pay will go from $2.13 to $15.00 for all employees.
Does that mean no more tipping ?
