In the annals of stupid PC-induced renaming of things, this one really doesn't bother me. After all, the term "manhole" really isn't all that descriptive of its function. Sure, it's a hole into which a man can enter; but so is a foxhole. (Maybe "manhole" would be a better term for what we now call a "foxhole.") "Maintenance hole" actually describes those things more accurately. "Utility hole" might have been even better, because they are holes that are used to access utility pipes.

Of course, the reason that the Berkeley guy wants to rename them isn't due to logic, it's due to a PC-warped mentality under which it's somehow sexist to use the term "man" in the sense of "any non-specific person" like it's been used for centuries. But even a broken clock is right twice a day.
