Folks are arguing about the culpability of the Royal Carribean cruise line in this tragedy. IMO they are responsible. I would never allow a little child to lean on glass to begin with, but the ship designed this poorly and it allowed for a freak accident to occur.
This is so sad. I think that both parties are to blame. What parent or grandparent would lift the kid up to sit on a ledge with a glass window? The Royal Carribean cruise shouldn't have had the window open. If they need ventilation they should have the one windows at the very top open.
All I see is an opening window with a rail where someone could conceivably sit a toddler.
Not much common sense from the grandfather or the designers.
I realize distances can be deceiving but from this and other pictures the safety railing does not appear to be waist high. Which seems to me to be beside the point. The point is that you don't use a handrail as a place to deposit things without holding onto to them.
I take 11-year-olds to sea on wooden ships, and they can mentally handle the entire concept of "it's a long way down, so think about what you're doing".
Right here is what is wrong with the country. Quit making excuses and deflecting blame.
They baby is dead because the person in charge was irresponsible and stupid.
I feel the granddad played a role in this tragedy, but the reality is, the cruise line will settle. This is what always happens, it is cheaper for them than an extended legal battle.

I agree that both are at fault and have said so many time throughout this thread but the grandfather must be suffering so. He will never live this down and his life is over.
Only the top tier of windows being able to open, would be the most obvious change.
The windows are there for people to be able to look out and enjoy the view. The top level windows would be too high up for anyone to look out of our take pictures from.
It seems like the most obvious solution is to not out a child in front of an open window.
Folks, if you go to 1.17 min you have a clear, closeup view of an open window. There is no way anyone could not tell that that window is open, and the rail is totally unsuitable to balance a toddler on. Sorry, this is all on the grandfather's shoulders, terrible as that burden is.
