Well, you have to give Trump credit. He tried to cost us more, pollute more and make more money for the fossil fuel companies.
But it's not going to work because progress and productivity and efficiency will win the day! The Free Market Reigns, even as much as Trump tries to force it....

One more little piece of proof why we aren't seeing 10-15% in the stock market and a booming economy...Trump has no plan except "rollbacks" to pollute and cause more suffering. Companies need to have long term goals and plans to prosper.
My prediction is that the entire Auto market will climb on board if
1. The Trump admin doesn't change course
or
2. Trump get re-elected.
This pretty much puts his "dictatorial edicts" into the waste basket.
Meh. So what? If California wants their people to pay more for a car with marginally better mileage, so be it.

Smart move by the auto makers. Aside from the fact that California represents the largest domestic market for automobiles, Trump will only be President for so long. Even if he gets re-elected, the costs for retooling, software design and all the other components for emissions control for what may be at best an extra four years isn't even close to worth it at the risk of tanking your best market.

We already are outdated in our transportation technology. The U.S. is made for high speed rail with the vast distances between our shores, but we are still using old 20th century technology because we refuse to spend on our infrastructure to bring us into the 21st century. The rest of the world looks at our trains and literally laughs at us for how backward we are.
Meanwhile, China has built more than 19,000 miles of high speed rail lines, most in the last decade, and have moved more than 9 billion people without a single passenger causality, all while reducing pollution and congestion on the roads. And the rest of Europe has followed suit.

None of which has anything to do with environmental concerns and everything to do with controlling the people and their money.
California does this sort of stuff all the time.
They know due to the size of their market once something must comply in CA it pretty much will roll out across much of the United States sooner or later. Everything from "inclusive/pro LGBT" textbooks to energy standards and so forth.
