It would have been so much more simple had young Mr. Trump just informed the FBI in the 1st place. All this brouhaha would not have happened.

No surprise there.

Likely the administration is currently working with Putin on 2020
If you watched that hearing yesterday you would have believed nothing happened in 2016. The senate republicans were believers so this was strange.

This is a signal to Russia and any other foreign government that wants to interfere in U.S. elections that the GOP is holding the door open for them. Because that's the kind of "patriots" they are.

it's already illegal so what were these bills attempting to do ? Make it more illegal ?
I already posted what the head of the FEC stated.

People bashing the Repubs but yet can't defend this bill ?
I found nothing new in the bill that isn't already law.

Of course they blocked the bill. The only way Republicans know how to win is to cheat.

What is in those bills that would prevent cheating ?

Must campaigns be hit in the head to obey the law? The FBI had already told the Trump campaign to expect communication from foreigners wanting to help them, and it was against the law.

Existing law is vague -- it only says it is illegal to "accept anything of value" from foreign governments. Things of value would include tangible items like money, airplane tickets, meals, rooms, etc.

We do need a new law that specifically bans conspiring to accept, knowingly accept, or passively accept electronic hacking, cyber attacks, and disinformation campaigns. These types of efforts generally don't have tangible value. The law also needs to require candidates and officials to report offers of foreign intervention to the FBI.

There is no legitimate reason for the Republicans to kill this bill.

The head of the FEC begs to differ.
My earlier post with her direct statements (I bolded the part about information).
The current law includes both tangible and intangible.
And if that were the case why a new law ? Why not modify the existing law ?
That's what makes me think this is just a bill in name only to push an agenda.

The head of the Federal Election Commission sent out a timely warning to politicians on Thursday, reminding them that it’s illegal to accept information from a foreign national linked to an election in the U.S.
..
Weintraub’s warning was direct: “Let me make something 100% clear to the American public and anyone running for public office: It is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election.

Here's a link to her statement that she posted on twitter:
