I can only conclude that either the GOP doesn't care about the democracy of our elections or they may benefit from interference of our elections by foreign governments.

Quote:
Democrats tried to get consent to pass two bills that would require campaigns to alert the FBI and Federal Election Commission about foreign offers of assistance, as well as a bill to let the Senate Sergeant at Arms offer voluntary cyber assistance for personal devices and accounts of senators and staff.

But Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) blocked each of the bills. She didn't give reason for her objections, or say if she was objecting on behalf of herself or the Senate GOP caucus. A spokesman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

So Mueller warns of continued election interference and the GOP responds by squashing any attempt to stop it.

Sounds about right.

Bills get blocked or are opposed all the time because of what is attached to the bill. This occurs on both sides, so that isn't really an honest characterization without knowing what else is in those bills.

This practice of attaching things to bills that are of no relation to the bill itself needs to end.

Was he warning about the USA interfering with other elections or someone interfering with ours?

Seems like we have a nasty habit of screwing with everyone else.

Sen. Hyde would not give her reasons for objecting. She could have mentioned what was attached or enlighten us. Instead she chose not to communicate any reason to the American people.

Hyde-Smith's objections were based on the bills being "overly broad" which I would guarantee they are, meaning that the majority can perpetually harass any minority party winner of any election at the federal level because they can have non-US citizens make $5 donations that they know don't get immediately reported, trot that non-citizen out as the example of malfeasance, then cast doubt over the entire election, blah blah rinse repeat until they election is discarded and they get a do over for their person to win.

I'd need to read the bills carefully, but given how fast three versions appeared within hours of Mueller opining that "election meddling is happening right now", methinks it is a Dem play to give the House majority the power to cast doubt on any Republican victory in any election between now and Nov 2020. They want more ways to convert their informal Orange Man Bad accusations into tangible crimes.

But once Bad Orange Man is gone, those broad, vague laws would remain, and be an absurdly powerful for incumbent majorities to consolidate and safeguard their power. Democrats and Republicans alike should fear such bills.

Nothing. It was a clean bill.
