Well, you have to give Trump credit. He tried to cost us more, pollute more and make more money for the fossil fuel companies.
But it's not going to work because progress and productivity and efficiency will win the day! The Free Market Reigns, even as much as Trump tries to force it....

A Win for the Planet and Progress- a LOSE for Trumpians.
One more little piece of proof why we aren't seeing 10-15% in the stock market and a booming economy...Trump has no plan except "rollbacks" to pollute and cause more suffering. Companies need to have long term goals and plans to prosper.
My prediction is that the entire Auto market will climb on board if
1. The Trump admin doesn't change course
or
2. Trump get re-elected.
This pretty much puts his "dictatorial edicts" into the waste basket.
News flash... free markets/capitalism allow people to collaborate and undertake projects on their own. The federal government is not necessary. If they can do this without government intervention and sustain it - you have my approval.

And gist of the story is automakers "striking a deal" with California's politicians to offer cars to their liking, which shouldn't be confused with building cars that their customers want, which of course would be "free market"

All the companies are trying to do is comply with the California laws in order to SELL CARS. California can pass any laws they want, and it is a big enough market for companies to want to comply. This has NOTHING TO DO WITH TRUMP. The OP is just has TDS dementia.
Auto makers would have a very hard time making two different sets of vehicles for different markets. They decided to go with the left wing hippies instead of the right wing boor.
Rational decision by them. This of course means reducing choice of consumers not in CA, but life goes on. Not sure how you would build an F150 that gets 50 MPG. Ford's problem. Not mine.
In addition, automakers will receive significant credits for adopting climate-friendly technologies. Under both California's and the federal government's fuel economy program, firms can receive credits toward meeting annual targets several ways, including cooling cars more effectively through less-polluting refrigerants and selling more electric vehicles.
So it's not totally a free market endeavor. Why not? I can understand for general design principles why a car would need some government oversight to make sure a company doesn't put a total bomb out on the roadways... but why the need for kickbacks if you have a product that people will want?
