I've never been to Baltimore, but I have a relative who graduated from Goucher recently.
He compared Baltimore to Cancun by saying there are pockets of nice and safe areas, but as a whole, it's fairly dangerous and poor. He said the University was like a resort, a pretty and safe pocket set apart from what surrounded it.
The point is not whether or not Baltimore is a "dump." New York City was a dump in the 70's and 80's. Look at it now. All it took was a little TLC, investment, and support from the private sector and government.
The real point is that the president of the US should not be trashing its cities publicly. That's a very bad look and insulting to all the people who live in those cities. Of course, the cities he attacks all have a large Democrat constituency, so calling them "dumps" does him no political damage. However, it does another, more troubling kind of damage when the leader of a nation bashes its cities and the people who live there. How about trying to help Baltimore the way he has pledged to help other regions of America suffering economically, like the Rust Belt? Maybe that's a silly question now that I think about it.

Baltimore residents pay a 3.2% special city income tax in addition state income tax, sales tax and property taxes to live basically in the third-world.
Looks like President Trump was right, he always been and always will be. Then again the Democrats are the party of crime and out of control births from poor people who will have children that will become future criminals.

There are constructive ways Trump could have made his point. There is a general problem with Democrat run inner cities: they're policies tend to push middle class families to the suburbs and after a couple decades it resembles a third world nation being 1/3 rich and 2/3 poor with no middle class. That more or less describes almost every Democrat controlled central city. And yes, much of Cummings district is a disaster even by third world standards. But the way Trump called out Baltimore and Cummings doesn't help the situation.
There are also terrible places in Red States and counties that overwhelmingly voted Trump that would never be called out the same way. Instead, those places are told they are victims of the 'War on Coal' and the heroin epidemic is the fault of pharmaceutical companies. In reality both problems of inner cities and poor Appalachian towns is a combination of bad policies and people not taking responsibility for their behavior.
What is the murder rate per 100,000 people in Appalachia compared to inner cities like Baltimore?
It's not racist, but the way he expresses himself is so uncouth it's embarrassing. He could have said there were enough problems in Baltimore that Cummings has ignored, so he should pay attention to what's going on in his own house.
Calling it a dump, even if it is, is not what I would call presidential dialogue.
Elijah Cumming has a big mouth he could have used it to catch the bullets and save those people but he choses to use it shooting verbal bullets at law enforcement !!! What a disgrace !!!
