Seems there are a number of reasons for declining sales for blades....and the change in marketing seems to be in reaction to losing sales -- so they are looking for bigger markets.
Just for the sake of clarity, Gillette is not a company as it was thirty years ago, it is a brand of Procter & Gamble.
Gillette and Schick (and Personna among others) in their heyday were in an analogous position to the big three automakers decades ago. I do believe the brand has lost market share over the last few decades, but it was a market they helped create and they were in a nearly monopolistic position in their market for years before, so it makes sense that their market share would eventually shrink from those salad days.
P & G is not, so far as I am aware, struggling financially.

My husband switched to Dollar Shave years ago. My sons rarely shave (31, 29 & 22).
DH tried the save clubs and didn't like them, so I think he still uses gillette. If I were to explain to him he should stop because of some marketing campaign he would look at me like I lost my mind.

You can get great double-edged blades on Ebay in several different good brands, and the razors too. I get excellent shaves with my old Gillette adjustable or my Merkur (from Germany). Those multi-bladed type of shavers so common today (I know, I used them) are a rip off.

Ignoring that you would never explain such a thing to your husband or if you did you would do it in a tone that would suggest how you expect him to react to such an explanation, internet spouses always react in ways that best fit whatever argument the internet poster is trying to make, otherwise they are internet ex-spouses.
If by struggling you mean they are #1, but just not by as big of a margin as before.

Just stay out of politics. You alienate 50% of your customer base if you go either left or right. The Gillette SJW campaign was over-the-top by any common-sense standards.
I still use Gillette, because from my experience no one makes a better razor, though I may look around cause things do change, but in the past when I've tried other brands they did not match up.
The CEO says dropping $5 billion was "worth it". I wonder what the shareholders say?
The CEO should be immediately fired. His duty is to the company and the shareholders, not his warped political views.
What an idiot. They have lost customers who will never go back to them, as no one wants left wing politics shoved down their throat when purchasing consumer goods. They alienated half of the population with their "ad campaign". Aren't ads supposed to help sales????
