It'd be a nightmare scenario for the Republicans if PR gets to vote in the House, Senate, and the Electoral College. It will not happen because not enough Democrats have the will to fight the Republicans on this.
I question PR's ability to function as an Independent nation. The Republicans have destroyed too many of their industry and a lot of things they have to start over if they have to function without US's funding. Not that the US has been generous.
So, they probably will continue as a colony for the long future.
Either is an improvement. If they become a state, they pay federal income tax like every other American citizen. No more handouts without some contribution.
Or if they become independent, no more drain on the US taxpayers. Buhbye, don't let the door hit ya in the azz.
I'd like to see them become independent and not be a financial and cultural drain on the United States. ("Cultural drain"? Yes. The last thing we need is a Canadian-style situation where one of our states is non-English speaking.) And because I'm generous, I'd let them keep whatever infrastructure that We the People have given them over the years, free and clear.
As for the inevitable question of the citizenship status of the island's inhabitants, seems like the best option is to give each of them a choice between American or Puerto Rican citizenship. Pick one and be done with it.

Yes they can. Dominicans do it - and they are not starving. There's no reason Puerto Rico can't be independent.
Their government doesn't have an incentive to be responsible because they know the federal government will always come to foot the bill and clean up the mess. If they were independent, and their well-being depending on having a functioning government/country, they would get it together.
Our colonial relationship has made them lazy AF, not just the government but the general population as well. That would change once independent. If there was no welfare/pulbic housing/food stamps etc, they would get up and do something.
They are US citizens. As they are in American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. We should fully incorporate them and end this half measure territory status.
If we want to cut citizens out based on being leeches, say goodbye to Mississippi, Kentucky, West Virginia, etc as well.

That would be absolute disaster.
That's colonialism. Those are all different people in different countries that have nothing do with the United States. Making them part of the U.S erases who they are as a people.
Puerto Rico is a Latin American country that belongs to the United States as a colonial possession. It is NOT part of the U.S. That's a whole different country with a different history unrelated to ours. They're like what the Filipinos were. It's ridiculous to just make them part of the United States. That's wrong. Colonialism is supposed to be a thing of the past.
