The US is set to withdraw thousands of troops from Afghanistan as part of an initial peace deal with the Taliban, it has been reported.

Almost 18 years after US, UK and other coalition troops invaded Afghanistan in pursuit of Osama bin Laden and his Taliban hosts in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Donald Trump appears set to keep a promise he made on the campaign trail to withdraw up to 6,000 of the US forces still there.

The Washington Post said the proposal expected to be implemented in the context of brokering a peace deal with the Taliban, would see the number of US troops cut from approximately 14,000 to between 7,000 to 8,000.

We went there to go after Al Qaeda and Bin Laden. Bin Laden is dead and although its impossible to completely crush a group Al Qaeda is a pale shadow of what it was. Some People don't realize that the Taliban had nothing to do with 911 and although they are a bunch of religeous thugs who will likely retake the country, it is not our job to deal with every Tyranical group on the planet. We have spent a fortune in blood and treasure and now its up to the Afghans to succeed or fail on their own.

It's about time we left Afghanistan.

per your article it says we will be leaving behind 7,000-8,000 troops that's still too many, but a good start.

Too many people I care about are over there right now. As much as I can't wait for them to get back home safely, I really hope they keep the details quiet from the media and everything else. We don't need them getting hurt or things to blow up worse.

Has there ever been a president deliver on campaign promises like this one?
He pulls the troop removal off, he will go down in history as being the only one to uphold this campaign promise....and quite possibly seal his chances of re-election.

I hope this doesn't mean I'll stop funding the evisceration of children via drone strike.

Blowing up 8-year-olds, locking up grandmas for feeding cats, raiding farmers with SWAT teams who sell fresh milk...it's the reason I get up every morning and go to work.
