I feel for you my friend. Leaving New York State was one of thee best decisions we ever could have made, and it was not just about guns and 2nd Amendment issues although it was indeed a major contributing factor.
Just having the freedom to not be governed by the insanity of these people was reason enough. All they've accomplished is making life miserable for those of us that are paying all the bills. The forgotten middle class.
New York's state and local governments are wholly owned subsidiaries of the public employee's and teacher's unions who have driven up the cost of living to astronomical levels thru excessive property taxes. I don't expect that to change anytime soon if ever. Political corruption is rampant and out of control in the "Vampire State". But I'm sure you're aware of all that. My wife calls it Liberalism run amok.
Unfortunately the Republican politicians in New York for the most part are only slightly better than the Democrats. They're a bunch of spineless RINO's. I've met New York's former Governor Pataki on several occasions when he was Mayor of Peekskill at his families vegetable stand. He loved to call himself a farmer, a man of the people,"Mister Pataki goes to Albany." He was some farmer and man of the people alright.
What a disappointment he turned out to be. He was nothing more than a political opportunist that only represented the political ambitions of George Pataki. Thank God he never achieved any national office especially president. I'm sorry I ever believed in and voted for him. But there was no other choice it was either him or "El Supremo" Mario Cuomo an arrogant Democrat of the worst order. If I'd stayed home on Election Day I'd have no right to complain. I'd never vote for a Democrat no matter who they nominate for ANY public office.
It's a great big wonderful country, just do your homework and you'll find a place that suits your lifestyle and needs. Once you're outta' New York State it will all become a distant memory and the awakening of a bad dream. I wish you all the luck in the world!
The fight to take away guns is not one party trying to neuter another like you imply. Just as many Democrats own assault rifles as Republicans do. We are just as invested in the 2nd Amendment as you are.
I've been an owner of numerous assault rifles for over 40 years. German HKs, AKs, ARs, FNs...…..etc. It's what I do. I shoot regularly and known locally as "Gunner". People come to me to fix their rifles, zero their gun in and teach them how to hit a clay at 150 yards with iron sights, off the shoulder. I can tell you that the ratio of shooters that use our town's open range is about 50/50 split on which side of the political fence they stand on. That's why nobody talks politics when we shoot. God help us all if that civility ceases among the gun owning community. Both sides practice, are well trained and have the best equipment. H

I wish that were true however many Democrat politicians have been the most vocal about it. Every time there is a sensationalized shooting they're the first one's calling for some type of ban or the other. While demonizing anyone who dares challenging them. They're always looking to place the blame on everyone and everything but the shooter. With the exception of John Chafee (R) RINO from Rhode Island, I've got plenty of quotes to prove the Democrats' general hostility towards the 2nd Amendment and those of us that support it. There are plenty of them on this forum as well.
I don't doubt that many Democrats including yourself are gun owner's too. Along with owning those evil semi automatic rifles that you've listed. Using the word "evil" I'm being sarcastic of course. But I can't for the life of me understand why any gun owner would want to vote for any Democrat? Especially those in today's Democrat Party? As you will be voting against your own interests. Once the 2nd Amendment goes the others are sure to follow. Unfortunately politics and 2nd Amendment issues are inseparable. You can choose to ignore them at your own peril.
Unfortunately civility has indeed ceased between the two opposing sides. All I really care about is preserving our Constitutional Republic from those who wish to turn this country into an unbridled Democracy. Where the majority rules regardless of political affiliation. Or turn this country into a socialist aristocracy of which only a few oligarch's will have absolute power and control. That's pretty much what California and New York have become. Both states are hopelessly and irrevocably controlled by Democrats.

In Arizona where I now reside as does "mohawkx" it's legal to own a fully automatic weapon that was manufactured before 1986 and it's registered with the federal government along with the payment of a $200 tax stamp. But they are prohibitively expensive as the supply is limited to only those particular weapons. Anything manufactured after 1986 can not be legally owned. The same applies to suppressor's but I'm not sure if those are limited by a date of manufacture?
Honestly, this is why these lonely crazy kids are doing mass shootings... look at us here, talking non-stop about it, reading his manifesto, along with the national media... a nobody is now a legend and his warped mind is now being read by millions.
Mexico plans to take legal action against the gun seller, and Trump is promising to take action too. Though somehow or other I have a feeling that Trump's plan will be something stupid, like more guns.

Regarding the above quote from your post, you're right. They are wrong to immediately push against the 2nd. First reason is they can never win that argument, so they're tilting windmills and secondly, you can never put the genie back in the bottle. Guns are an integral part of the American culture, like it or not. Finally, the founders specifically gave the American people the responsibility of protecting our freedom from tyrants by specifically writing in the bill of rights the 2nd.
I believe the answer is to figure out how to deal with that fact and come to bipartisan agreement on how to use reasonable restrictions to vet the purchasers of all guns in America. I was very intrigued by the other poster's idea of requiring liability insurance for all gun ownership. This would immediately place vetting of gun owners just like insurance carriers vet their drivers. This could be done without any new laws or restrictions except requiring insurance.
At the least it would be a great SCOTUS case. "Does requiring liability insurance violate the 'Shall not be infringed' section of the 2nd Amendment."
Great question to ask.
