He won’t go. I wouldn’t go there. Place is a pit.

Someone must have told Cummings to do this. He isn't that smart. Nationally putting a huge spotlight on the problem area.

Some of it, yes. Like this:

https://www.google.com/maps/@39.3003...7i13312!8i6656

However, some of those neighborhoods are in such an advanced stage of abandonment, that it probably won't be long until you can buy up most of entire neighborhoods and fix the whole thing up. Even the criminals will be largely gone by then. Plus, many of them still have lots of really nice old townhouses remaining. Like this:

Elsewhere, no I would not call the following a pit:

Why? So he (Cummings) can show Trump how wrong he is about the city? That Baltimore is really a great city and a safe and wonderful place to live??

Or maybe, he will ask Trump for more billions to help fix his city.

My 17 year old told me he wanted to apply to Loyola (Baltimore).

Nope.

It's been a ****hole for decades, I don't know why the truth is so offensive.

How shocking that EIGHT YEARS of Obama did NOTHING at all to improve the city of Baltimore... which is a stone's throw away from Washington, D.C. and the White House. And did I miss hearing about Cummings inviting Obama to visit his city back then, and to ask for help in fixing all that urban blight?

At least with Trump, he may be a bull in a china shop with his unscripted tweets, but he is so much more productive that Obama with his carefully scripted speeches by his team of top speechwriters.

I was impressed with the large-scale renewal they were doing in much of the city at the time. There were huge areas west of downtown where they were fixing up all the rowhouses there all at once. I was so impressed, when I got back home I wrote the mayor, Donald Schaefer, a letter telling him I was impressed. I got a thank you letter back from him, and for several years afterwards I regularly received promotional and other items in the mail from the mayor of Baltimore.

Anyway, Baltimore has some of the most fantastic collection of rowhouses in the country. Beautiful city, even with the large dumpy areas. Trump, being a former real estate developer, should be able to appreciate it. At least I would hope.

And, not all of Baltimore is rowhouses. Plenty of green, leafy suburban areas in the northern parts of the city.

And of course, the Inner Harbor area downtown is really cool. When I was there the marketplace had just been finished a few years beforehand.

As usual, these political episodes calling such-and-such a city a "rathole" or whatever is pretty stupid. Yeah, some parts are a rathole. Large swaths of it are really nice. Same with my own city.

Schaefer was the last honest Mayor of Baltimore. Much has changed since 1981. None for the better.
