Illinois had the distinction of having two of its former governors ( a Republican and a Democrat) in prison at the same time. Blagojevich was a king of “ pay to play” and got 18 year Federal sentence for attempting to sell a state Senate seat ( on tape) and other assorted crimes of corruption.

Blago was the first Democrat in 30 years to be elected Governor in Illinois in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. Trump was a donor. Trump Org built and opened Trump Hotel and condo tower in Chicago, during that timeframe.

A boatload of charges of corruption were filed against Blago including attempts to exhort the owners of the right leaning Chicago Tribune to fire editors who were critical of him.

Blago was impeached, convicted and removed from office in 2009 and then faced federal charges.

Blago was a guest celebrity on Apprentice in 2010. Not clear why Trump would choose a former governor who was removed from office and under Federal Investigation to be a guest on his show.

He was convicted by a federal court in 2012. He received a stiff sentence. His subsequent requests for parole have been denied. Trump has called it a tragedy and blamed Comey/ FBI.

And yesterday, Trump said he is considering commuting Blago’s sentence.

"considering" *shrug*

I'm still mad that someone in the FBI leaked the investigation which kept them from also nabbing a dozen or so of others including Roland Burris and other big names in IL politics. A bunch of others should be in club fed with Blago.

Trump has built a lot of stuff in major US cities over the years. It's naïve to think that the various unions and democratic power brokers didn't require favors etc. from his companies as well as everybody else doing business there. So to be blunt, yeah trump almost certainly had to pay off blago and many others over the years. Heck the first place I worked in Chicago had a connected guy from a powerful family and the minute they started working there we started getting accounts from CTA, METRA and other city and state institutions. LMAO.

Chicago is an oligarchy with more corruption than I can stomach having lived in or near there for years. Something to remember when paying all those fat property and other taxes.

Blago is probably the cleanest politician to come out of Chicago in 75 years.

No, Mike Madigan is the king of pay to play. By. Far. And he's still at it.

As far as I know, the only crime he did was trying to get favors/bribes for Obama's previous seat... I think the sentence was particularly harsh and I wouldn't be oppose to commuting a non-violent crime for a first offender...

I used to live in Illinois. Political corruption is a given there, as there have been three (not two) governors in the last 20 years that have been jailed.

Illinois is like a third world nation, in which many judges are also corrupt. Bribing judges is not uncommon in Illinois and a DEA agent told me that trying cases in Illinois is tough, as many judges are corrupt.

Corruption in politics is an Illinois tradition. It is not surprising that Obama came from Illinois, as he fit the mold quite well.

No kidding. But why would Trump even consider a commutation with that slimeball?

Commuting Sentence of Blagojevich

The crimes of Blagojevich were crimes against the people of Illinois.

What honest law abiding person would be moved to commute the sentence of someone like that?

Pay to Play is the way of pols from the smallest town in the nation up to Capital Hill.

Period. No exceptions. I've been there (at least in the meetings....and on the local, county and state level).....

that is the way it is. If people want to change things they can...but not in the ways they currently think.
