When it became more comfortable and socially acceptable for people to live on the government doll than getting a job and supporting themselves. When the stigma of living on welfare eternally wore off for a lot of people is when things started going downhill.

Bell bottoms. I think it was the year bell bottom trousers became popular. Young people found it far too easy to doff their pants with those things that were designed so sailors of old could get out of their woolen pants before they went down with their ship.

I think with the advancement of the internet and the speed that information and images can spread, that has accelerated the decline noticeably.
