Because an armed populace is the most dangerous thing possible to a tyrannical government and all governments are (by nature) attempting to become more and more tyrannical.
It's an amendment. It can be changed or repealed. The founding fathers knew that. Not likely, but it can be.
Changing or repealing the 2nd amendment doesn't eliminate the right of every person to self defense and protection. The 2nd amendment doesn't grant us the right to bear arms, it simply protects the right we already have.
