It would be really hard to vote for trump if he signs "red flag" confiscation into law. I'm not sure I could stomach voting for the most anti 2nd amendment president ever. I'd probably just stay home. His silly bump stock ban was bad enough, but red flag confiscation is too much.
He must want to purposely lose the election if he does this, or he is gravely mistaken that the people who hate him will suddenly like and support him if he caves, which of course they won't.
I feel betrayed that this is even up for discussion. At least Democrats are upfront and honest with you that they want to take the guns.
There are about 17 states that already have some kind of Red flag law.
There have been a number of shootings that have been stopped by a good guy with a gun, there is no indication that anyone had any trouble identifying who was who.

The truth is that there is quite a bit of opposition to including mental illness into the background checks, it's just not from the NRA, who are all for keeping guns out of the hands of people that are truly mentally ill.

You have it backwards. The center and right own the NRA-they work for us to protect our civil rights, to teach responsible gun ownership and use and to host firearms competitions.
The will of the people is to not have our civil rights eroded, that is why congress respects the will of the people, and doesn't pass more anti-gun legislation.
Rights come with responsibilities. if the background checks in place now aren't sufficient to stop a nutjob from buying a gun, then they should become deeper and more thorough.
Gun registration is something no law abiding citizen should object to, as registration makes recovery of a stolen gun more likely, and a citizen who commits no crime with a gun should be afraid of it. It's exactly the same as registering a car, or getting a license; taking the responsibilty for the item, so the item's ownership is assured.
Criminals won't register their guns, but if an armed citizenry's legally- owned guns are all registered, it will be far easier to know who the criminals are, and far easier to prosecute them for their crimes.
McConnell and tRump will do whatever the NRA tells them to.
And, lucky for them, these two mass murders occurred just as congress goes into summer recess and tRump retreats to his golf club for the next 10 days.
I seriously doubt that either of them will come back to work ready to face down the NRA.
But when this gun debate breaks, it'll be fast and it'll be done and over with. Might not be for a number of years yet, but it will break. As my fellow boomers die off and millennials become the power cohort, it'll be all over.
