Before you answer, please note that the courts have ruled repeatedly that government or police has no duty to protect any individuals.

You havew a right to self defence and to use reasonable force in most countries and no one is arguing that Americans must give up the handun that they have in their bedside table for protection.

The debate in the US is mainly about allowing centre fire semi-automatic type weapons, and even that is controversial in terms of US politics.

So I am not sure what the argument is in relation to protectng yourself.

In terms of other countries the police do have a duty to protect you, in Europe, Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights states that the police have positive duty to protect life in certain circumstances.

Article 2: Right to life | Equality and Human Rights Commission

Furthermore if the police receive credible information that there may be a threat to your life they must warn you, and they usually visit you and give you what is known as an Osman Warning in the UK. Over 2,000 Osman warnings have been issued in recent years and recently gang warfare in Scotland saw a number of Osman warnings issued. The police may also advise you on security and may in some circumstances put a guard at your property or install a silent panic alarm. However given that many Osman warnings are in relation to organised crime and extremist groups, police advie is not always heeded.

Wouldn't want to. Life comes with inherent risks.

Warren v. District of Columbia.

Government has no obligation to protect, or keep you safe.

In all fairness to the government, you aren't actually "killed".

You are "collaterally damaged".
