The only people carrying long guns in public places are those looking for a reaction and attention. Most avid gun nuts aren't going to bring unnecessary NEGATIVE attention to themselves or their fellow gun enthusiasts. Why rock the boat?

Please. You really think the gun toting populace could be effective against our current military? That ship has sailed into history.
A gun toting populace that our currently deployed force outnumbers has been holding their own just fne with small arms for 17 years and change.
The gun toting populace that is armed Americans outnumbers the entire military by ~100:1. It out numbers the actual gun carrying, trained, infantry type job codes by ~800:1.
Finally, the current military is an all volunteer force that works under a system of lawful orders. Lawful matters to a volunteer.
Your government wields less true power than you think. The real nature of their power is your belief in that power and the fear of it. You fear what would happen if they were angry and took away your toys. And that fear is the basis of their control, not some irresistible force or godlike power.

I agree 1,000 percent. What makes ANYONE think they can strap an AK assault type weapon to their back and that they can wander into a WalMart without drawing fear and attention ?
Those guys have a serious, serious inferiority complex and probably a lot of other problems on top of that. They have been playing too many video games and it warped their minds.
Personally having a CCW and I carry concealed I don't like open carry. Its not of any use. First off if I were going to do something evil the first person I would take out would be the guy carrying open. You have lost your element of surprise. Second you will un nerve someone. This only serves to make people more scared of guns. There is no good reason and IMO the only people who want it are those who want to be in your face like the radical left on being gay. Get a CCW and don't be an idiot.

I have never seen a person open carrying a rifle, hand gun, or any firearm in public unless it was at a gun range, and I have lived all over the U.S. in states that allow open carry.
The guy at Springfield was stupid, but what law did he break?
You can legally open carry a rifle in Missouri.
You can legally open carry a handgun.
You can legally wear body armor.
You can legally carry ammunition.
Walmarts do not prohibit open carry in Missouri.

Apart from the fact that the overwhelming majority of gun related homicides in this country are committed via handgun, does anyone honestly think that banning long guns would stop mass shootings? If so, I have a bridge to sell you. You'd simply see nut cases switch over to handguns and they'd inflict similar mass carnage. The rifle happens to be the weapon of choice for many, but banning the rifle won't stop mass shootings. It just won't.
Handguns are easy to reload and you can cause mass casualties via that weapon, too.
You really think someone with a handgun can take out almost 50 people in a matter of seconds?
For me it has more to do with the number of rounds, not the size. The only guns available at the time the 2nd Amendment was written could only fire one round at a time and took about 20 seconds to load. I’d be fine with keeping that and restricting multi-round guns to a reasonable limit.
