not necessarily. Just that many people/agencies dropped the ball. There were many ways they could have gotten help. Where was the couple's family and friends? Did they not know of their troubles? And did they have medicare? What were the bills that were going unpaid? And the big question, who killed who? Did the husband kill the wife, or the reverse? The article suggests the husband killed the wife.
This whole scenario makes no sense. If the elderly couple was so destitute that they couldn't afford their medical bills, they'd have already been on Medicaid.
Right and if not, then they would be on Medicare. And I recommend a supplement to pay for what Medicare doesn't cover. My parents' supplement cost about $125 a month. Everything - EVERYTHING - was covered between Medicare and the supplemental insurance.

Well, I am sorry but I think they made a grave error in judgment.
Of course, they BOTH did have serious, ongoing medical issues and that can really cloud one's judgment.

People fret over using tax dollars to fund our health care, but happily as much or more to private insurance companies. Look what the ACA has cost us and what did we get? An old car with no engine transmission or handles on the doors.
Bring the troops home. Cut our spending by 25%. If shipping companies want us to patrol pirate infested waters, let them pay for the service.
Our seniors absolutely deserve better. Just for the record the ACA obviously didn't do anything for these people.
Illegals don't pay any bills and no one "goes after them". All they had to do was not pay the bills. I'd rather foot the bill for an Americans unpaid bill then someone here illegally from Guatemala soaking tax payers.
The article says little about any of it. Neighbors said the wife had advanced Alzheimers.
In the best of circumstances, many know very little about their options for Alzheimer patients.
In a little town like Ferndale - that's not even close to "best" of circumstances. I'm not even sure that town has a Doctor - found several Dentists and an Acupuncturist, but no Medical Doctor.
Advanced Alzheimer's is godawful for the spouse and loved ones. I mean, there is simply no good end and the person you loved is gone, gone, gone. Very depressing.
There are facilities available, but a spouse has to be willing to place their spouse in a facility. And in a tiny town, options are limited and so there might be a drive involved - and the husband had serious medical issues as well.
It's a very sad situation. Dementia is a cruel, cruel disease. And there is no real treatment for it - you basically just try to maintain as your loved one loses every shred of who they used to be.
What a tragedy on so many levels. An elderly husband and wife died in an apparent murder-suicide in Washington state on August 7th. A 77-year-old man called 911 on Wednesday morning saying he planned to die by suicide. Despite attempts by crisis negotiators to stop it, the couple went through with it. Deputies found several notes throughout the home in which the couple expressed despair over high medical bills. If the couple couldn't afford their current medical bills, they would not have been able to afford psychiatric care also. I'm sure other factors contributed to their demise, but financial stresses certainly didn't help.

According to the ME, BOTH had "significant" health problems. It's just as possible that they didn't want to spend money on conditions which were, ultimately, incurable.
