Glad I read the story before responding. Speaking in a foreign language while in uniform isn’t disgraceful. When conducting military operations is another matter. She was on the phone in her off time. It’s not like she was talking in Spanish during a military operation.

I am 71. I spend a lot of time in my college classes trying to help 20 somethings. If they can't google it they are lost. Most of the teachers won't let them use their phone.
My own daughter has a teaching degree and can't spell.

Please provide a link that the majority of American students can't spell or use proper English. Your initial post didn't distinguish between American students and Americans in general. Back peddling now? There are plenty of mature adults on Facebook also not just the young ones.

Our education system is floundering having to spend so much time with students who enter our schools and don't know a lick of English. Native English speakers are being marginalized by that.

No. Go anywhere online, including CD and look at the poor English used.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but....

I deal with the general public every day. I have done so for years, and I have done so in many states. A large proportion of Americans apparently failed English class. They use terms, words, and phrases incorrectly. Even here on these forums, you will find great examples of people who use English incorrectly.

It doesn’t end with the general public, either. I proofread and edit for authors of articles as a sideline. You would be amazed at how many are incapable of simple spelling as well as the proper usage of words. There is a reason that the writing world has editors.

Frankly, I don’t care if people speak Spanish. The woman in uniform was rude for having a telephone conversation in a public place, not because she was speaking Spanish.

I merely mentioned Youtube because you can find plenty of videos with people who are Americans and can't(or won't) speak the English language properly.

I'm not surprised to see college students, and even college graduates who can't spell. I know a few, who are in their 30s, who don't spell properly. I remember college students who got docked a few points on their term papers because of spelling errors.

Some of my college teachers make numerous misspellings and use poor English. I had one class on line that I had trouble understanding what the teacher was posting. He had a PHD. in Geography.
Go on Kindle and check some of the self-published books. Most have numerous mistakes. I had a couple published on there myself, so I have read many others.

I find nothing offensive about Americans speaking other language in uniform, at work, at home, wherever. If I go to Miami and try to place an order in a cafe and nobody speaks English that is offensive. But I have no problem with the soldier speaking freely as he/she wishes.

So you think that the majority of Americans are on Facebook and/or here on CD? Again, you might want to blame our education system for those who don't have good English skills. One of the reasons as I pointed out is the large number of non-English speaking students who have flooded our schools in the past couple of decades or so and require most of the attention of our teachers.
